Kansas State called for strange technical foul for dunking during pregame warmups

You don’t see this every day.

In a strange, but correctly-enforced rule, Kansas State was assessed a technical foul before its game against Kentucky even started just because a player dunked during warm-ups.

Seriously.

Sophomore Brian Rohleder, a seldom-used walk-on guard, threw down a dunk and grabbed the rim during the team’s layup drills with less than 20 minutes until gametime. That’s a “Class B” technical foul, so Kentucky was awarded two free throws before the opening tipoff.

Kentucky’s Andrew Harrison knocked down one of two of the free throws to give UK a 1-0 lead.

This is the second strange technical foul to take place in the NCAA tournament thus far. Cincinnati was assessed with an administrative technical foul when coach Mick Cronin brought in Jermaine Sanders off the bench, but whoever filled out the team’s scorebook forgot to include Sanders on the team roster. Harvard hit one of two free throws, helping the Crimson edge the Bearcats 61-57.

If Kansas State goes on to lose by one point, you’ll be hearing about this wacky rule for a while, that’s for sure.
