Breakfast Buffet: Injury bug strikes hard-luck Louisville again

1. Already without talented freshman Wayne Blackshear (right shoulder) and forwards Rakeem Buckles (right knee) and Stephan Van Treese (left knee), Louisville lost another key player Sunday — this time for the season. The school announced late Sunday night that junior guard Mike Marra suffered a torn left ACL when he fell to the court with 12:17 left in the Cardinals' 68-48 win over Lamar earlier in the day.

2. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski shared a funny Bob Knight anecdote after his team thumped Presbyterian on Saturday to deliver his record-tying 902nd win. Said Krzyzewski of Knight: "He says to me, 'Michael … Can you tell your kids to win those three games real quick?' I said, `Coach, yeah, those first three, every game's important.' He says, `No, no, not for that. I'm getting tired of saying nice things about you.'"

3. If Texas is going to contend in the Big 12 despite the early departure of three talented underclassmen last spring, junior guard J'Covan Brown is probably going to have to carry the scoring load many nights. Brown looked up to the part in the Longhorns' season-opening 82-46 pounding of Boston University on Sunday, scoring 28 points on 11-for-19 shooting and dishing out eight assists for good measure.

4. How bad an omen was UCLA's season-opening 11-point home loss to Loyola Marymount on Friday night? Well, first of all, the Bruins played listless defense, failed to capitalize on their size advantage in the paint and got a horrific game from point guard Lazeric Jones. Worse yet, the enigmatic Lions followed up their big victory two days later by staggering to a 58-51 loss at home to Middle Tennesee State.

5. Other more inexperienced Pac-12 foes with greater upside may eventually catch up with Cal, but there's little doubt that the 24th-ranked Bears are the best team in their conference as the season begins. They did nothing to dispel that notion Sunday night against George Washington, riding a 21-0 run to end the first half to a 81-54 shellacking of the visiting Colonials. {YSP:MORE}

Highly touted Minnesota transfer Royce White only raised expectations further for himself with his performance in his Iowa State debut against Lehigh on Saturday. In addition to 25 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, White delivered this crowd-pleasing slam just before halftime in the Cyclones' 86-77 victory. "I'm just excited to finally see him explode like that in a game situation," teammate Chris Babb told the Ames Gazette.

"It was good to see the crowd stand up for me and everybody be there for me. I really needed that." — Arizona forward Kevin Parrom, who tallied six points and four rebounds in his surprise return Sunday against Ball State. Parrom, who was shot in the hand and the leg in September, received a hug from his head coach and a standing ovation from the McKale Center crowd. (Arizona Daily Star)
