SF Giants into playoffs as Brewers fall

The Giants will play baseball in October.

With the Brewers' loss to the Reds on Thursday, San Francisco clinched one of the two Wild Card spots.

Entering today's games, the Giants trail Pittsburgh by one game for the top position.

However, it is essentially a two-game lead for the Pirates because they own the tie-breaker with the Orange and Black.

The Giants could also play the Cardinals in next Wednesday's Wild Card matchup if they are unable to fend off Pittsburgh, who trails St. Louis by 1.5 games entering today's action.

If the Giants and Cardinals were the Wild Cards and finished with identical records, the Giants hold the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the regular-season series between the clubs.

St. Louis is idle today, while the Pirates play in Atlanta and the Giants host the Padres tonight.

The Nationals won the NL East nine days ago, and the Dodgers won the NL West with their victory over the Giants Wednesday night.
