Position statement: Who is worthy of a franchise tag?

The two week franchise tag window is set to open, and Mike Florio says not to be surprised if many teams use it to their advantage again this year. 21 teams used the tag a year ago, and under the new labor deal, it’s becoming cheaper to place a tag on a player. While some fans may laugh at the idea, many teams use the tag on a kicker or punter because, at $2.9 million, it’s much cheaper than handing out a multi-year deal. Another guy we can assume will get the tag, if a long-term deal isn’t worked out, is Ravens’ Super Bowl winning QB Joe Flacco.
