How will 49ers handle 'suspicious incident' report concerning Kaepernick?

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is named in a “suspicious incident” report filed last week by the Miami Police Department.

Quinton Patton, a 49ers wide receiver, and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette, a close friend of Kaepernick, were also named in the report filed by a woman who told police she woke up in a hospital and did not know how she got there.

"There's no evidence of a crime or a sexual assault," Miami Police spokesman Rene Pimental told the Bay Area News Group. "This report is simply an incident report taken at the woman's request."

Kaepernick and Patton, who is entering his second NFL season, have been working out in Miami at Bonmarito Performance Systems since the second week of February.

Kaepernick and Lockette formed a tight friendship during Lockette's time on the 49ers' practice squad in 2012 and during the offseason. The 49ers released Lockette, a wide receiver, in training camp and he finished the season with the Super Bowl-winning Seahawks.

The alleged victim reported to police that on April 1 at approximately 9 p.m., she visited Lockette's apartment. Kaepernick and Patton were also there. She said she mixed drinks and prepared shots for them and was told that in order to drink the shots, she had to "hit" the bong, which contained marijuana, according to the police report.

She said to police that she began to feel light-headed and went to a bedroom to lie down. Kaepernick, with whom she said she had a previous sexual relationship, followed her into the bedroom. They did not have sex, she told police.

Shortly thereafter, the alleged victim said she could not remember anything else that happened. She woke up in a hospital bed and does not remember how she got there or who transported her to the hospital, according to the police report.

Miami Police states that the investigation is continuing.

Kaepernick, a three-year NFL veteran, is considered a possible face-of-the-49ers player and is line for a lucrative contract extension.

Recently at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla., team general manager Trent Baalke said the objective was reach a long-term contract extension with Kaepernick before the start of training camp in late-July. Kaepernick’s original four-year contract expires after the upcoming season.

Moreover, 49ers CEO Jed York said, “I think there’s a lot that he’s done that has put him in that position where he should be paid like one of the top quarterbacks in the league. And I think that’s where we’ll end up -- whether we get it done now or later. We hope we get it done soon.”

On Thursday when the first report of the Miami investigation involving Kaepernick surfaced, Baalke issued the following statement: “The 49ers organization is aware of the recent media report regarding Colin Kaepernick and is in the process of gathering the pertinent facts.”
