It's official: World Extreme Cagefighting for little men only
I had always been a little confused by the role of World Extreme Cagefighting. Since they are owned by Zuffa, were they a minor league for the UFC? At the same time, they had weight classes that the UFC did not, so were they a place for lighter weight classes? After a month of rumors, WEC officially cut their welterweight division and added flyweights, clarifying their spot in the MMA world.
Just as they did when shedding the middleweight and light heavyweight class, the UFC will pick up the best of the WEC welterweights. Carlos Condit has already signed for a fight with Martin Kampmann at Ultimate Fight Night 18, and Brock Larson will fight Jesse Sanders on the same card.
The WEC will now have the monopoly on American lower-weight fighters. With Miguel Torres, Mike Brown and Urijah Faber in the mix, they are poised for growth. Hopefully, that will mean the addition of fighters like Noriyuki "Kid" Yamamoto, pictured above with Faber. Now that they'll have the market on men under 155 lbs. cornered, perhaps they can show a little love to the ladies.
