A blockbuster night: Yankees trade Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda, sign Hiroki Kuroda

The Yankees remade their pitching rotation by adding Michael Pineda (right) but it cost them Jesus Montero. (A …

This is why the New York Yankees pay Brian Cashman the big bucks to be general manager.

Cashman reconstructed the Yankees starting rotation Friday night by making a bold trade with the Seattle Mariners for right-hander Michael Pineda and throwing a lot of money at free-agent righty Hiroki Kuroda.

The Yankees moved their top prospect, slugging catcher Jesus Montero, along with right-hander Hector Noesi to the M's for Pineda and 19-year-old right-hander Jose Campos. Larry Stone of the Seattle Times broke the story.

Wow! Some people love a parade. I love a baseball trade, especially one featuring the two best young players in their respective organizations. When's the last time a deal like this was made? Josh Hamilton for Edinson Volquez in 2007?

The key for the Yankees, of course, is stabilizing what was a spotty rotation in 2011.  Pineda, also 22, pitched like an ace in the first half for the Mariners in 2011 before falling off in the second half. He still finished with 173 strikeouts, an opponents .211 batting average and a 3.74 ERA in 171 innings. Also appealing: He has "ace" stuff and appears to have the same kind of mentality.

The Yankees also reminded everyone how much money they have by signing Kuroda to a $10 million deal for 2012. Kuroda, who turns 37 next month, has a 3.45 ERA in 699 career innings, all with the Los Angeles Dodgers. With CC Sabathia, Pineda and Kuroda in the rotation, the Yankees won't have to worry about the front of their rotation anymore. They also have some room to breathe if Ivan Nova regresses, Phil Hughes doesn't make a sharp turnaround and Freddy Garcia doesn't sweat out another effective season. And if you're wondering why A.J. Burnett hasn't been mentioned ... you are very observant.

Signing Kuroda is one thing, but it's not anywhere as gutsy as trading Montero, who is 22 years old with a dynamite (not literally) bat. The problem with Montero: He's not exactly the second coming (pardon the Jesus pun) of Johnny Bench behind the plate. His best position, Baseball Prospectus Kevin Goldstein and others say, is DH. In 69 at-bats with the Yankees in 2011, he batted .328/.406/.590 with four homers and four doubles.

Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik needed to upgrade his team's offense and even though Montero was a tad disappointing to the Yanks at Class AAA in '11, he projects to be perhaps Seattle's best hitter already. An aside: Montero nearly went to the Mariners in a trade for Cliff Lee (who eventually got moved to the Texas Rangers) in 2010.

Noesi and Campos aren't insignificant pieces, just not as sexy. Noesi gives the M's an OK arm for the rotation, probably/maybe, and Campos has more upside being five years younger. Baseball Instinct did a detailed write-up on Campos; it appears the Yankees did their homework.

It's going to be fascinating to watch this play out. The M's have young pitching coming up behind ace Felix Hernandez, and now they have a big stick in the middle of the lineup to help score him some runs. The Yankees are the Yankees, and Cashman is the best at his job in the business. Can you say "good deal for both teams"?

The trade makes sense, but I had really grown on Montero. The first game in the new stadium for me was during his first two home runs and the way he hit them was scary for a rookie.

It was a good trade and a signing but aren't we getting a little far ahead of ourselves by saying, "problem solved"? Kuroda is a good signing. Consistent pitcher that has played in a big market and put up with the Dodgers soap opera. Pineda played in a pitcher's park. He has great stuff but his second half was really rough. There are some question marks to be answered with the season started. It isn't like the Yanks signed Cliff Lee.

You'd think the other teams play for minimum wage and the Yankee players are the only ones who make millions....the way y'all talk about The Yanks "Buying a championship". I don't get some of y'all. Here you have a direct 'give me your good young player and I'll give you mine' type of trade, and payroll comes up...Yet when the Yanks, don't make moves like these, People complain that they should instead of going on a spending spree.....

Pineda had a good first half of the season last year in a HUGE pitchers' park till the batters began figuring him out. Pitching in tiny little Yankees Stadium is going to really challenge him. I like the guy, best of luck.

Pineda is one of the best throwers in MLB if he can become more of a pitcher he has no ceiling.

Great trade. I am hearing Montero will bat 350, with 35 homers and 140 rbi. This from a guy with only 61 major league at bats with 4 hr's and 12 rbi. I think he may be great but right now he is only an unproven prospect. He has not proved that he can hit or play a position. Most prospects do not achieve their potential. Pineda pitched well in the majors for a year. He is more proven than just a prospect. A good pitcher is much more valuable than a good hitter. A proven pitcher is extremely more valuable than an unproven prospect no matter how good we may think the prospect will be, especially if he may only become just a DH.

I think the Pineda - Montero swap will be good for both teams. I wonder about Noesi - Campos though. Don't know anything about Campos, but Noesi was looking pretty good last year.

If Campos stays healthy he'll be a solid 3-4 guy. Of course young pitchers drop like flies.

Montero is a great player don't get me wrong, but the yankees hyped him up as only they can, and then traded him for someone who can potentially blossom into a right handed C.C. Hate the Yanks, but great move on Cashman's part.

Good deal. Get a good young pitcher to be the heir apparent when Sabathia is gone. Kuroda had a nice ERA but going to a league where the pitchers don't bat may raise it about 1/2 a run. I don't think he's worth 10 mil though. If Austin Romine is a better defensive catcher and a slightly lesser offensive one, I can live with that.

not happy about losing Montero, hope Pineda is worth it. Could have definitely used a potential #1 or #2 catcher for the next 8 years.

You can buy a division title, which explains why the Yankees make the playoffs each year. But, you can't buy a pennant and you definitely can't buy a world series. You see, everyone was talking up the Phillies this time last year and, well, we know how that went. . . It's all about who's hot at the right time. . . Now, GO SOX!!!
    • mrsly69  •  4 months ago
For the idiot who states you can't buy a title. THEY ALL BUY TITLES! And 5 titles in 14 years for the YANKS, not to shabby if you ask me. GREAT TRADE and soon to be 6 titles in 15 years. It is all about getting to the playoff's anyway and this should clinch it.
