Suspend disbelief for this ridiculous circus play on an Iowa two-point conversion
You have to be kidding.
It's hard to react any other way to the play you see above. Gehlen Catholic School (Le Mars, Iowa) doesn't line up with a placekicker, so they're forced to go for two points whenever they score a touchdown. Occasionally, that leads to some pretty wild plays, though few can compete with the circus catch above.
During the team's homecoming victory against North Union High (Armstrong, Iowa), Gehlen scored a touchdown on a pass from senior quarterback Blake Wiltgen. Then the team lined up for the requisite two-point conversion.
After the snap Wiltgen rolled left but found himself cut off from the end zone by onrushing North Union defenders. Soon, one caught up to him and began to wrestle Wiltgen to the ground.
Instead of playing it safe and accepting the sack, Wiltgen somehow squirmed out of it, hurling the ball up as he went down. The football soared through the air and eventually landed right in the hands of completely-open senior Colton Kneip in the back of the end zone.
How Wiltgen saw his receiver there, we'll never know. It was a minor miracle that he even got the pass off, let alone got off a heave that had a picture perfect trajectory.
In the end Gehlen cruised to a 42-26 victory, so the two-point conversion hardly made a major impact. No matter. It's still unquestionably one of the plays of the year.
