High school freshman football phenom Dylan Moses commits to LSU
The most highly publicized youth football player in memory committed to LSU over the weekend -- just four games into his freshman season at his high school a mile up the road.
Dylan Moses, 15, announced his commitment on Twitter, and ESPN later confirmed the Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab School freshman's decision via text message.
Here's what Rivals Analyst Jason Howell had to say about Sunday's announcement:
LSU just picked up their first commitment of the 2017 recruiting class, and while that may seem a wee bit ridiculous, we’re not talking about your normal freshman athlete here. This is 6-foot-1, 220-pound, 4.5 running, 33-inch vertical jumping Dylan Moses, who picked up offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida St., Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Texas, UCLA and pretty much anyone who’s fielding a major college football team in 2013. And he picked up these offers before the first game of his freshman year.
This is definitely not your typical 2017 prospect, and there’s no doubt this is a huge get for LSU. Moses is an extremely gifted athlete and has Division I size and athleticism right now today. He has put in most of his time at running back and linebacker, and if he continues to grow, he could find a few more possible positions out there.
Moses first made national headlines when LSU coach Les Miles, Alabama's Nick Saban and everyone else in between offered him a scholarship as an eighth-grader, when he registered a 4.46-second 40-yard dash and 34-inch vertical leap at LSU's football camp. Fittingly, Moses is still considered a general "athlete" prospect because there's plenty of time for him to nail down precisely what position he's best at.
Despite all the interest, the Tigers always appeared to have a leg up on the field, considering Moses plays for the same high school team as Miles' son Manny and two other LSU recruits: junior running back Nick Brossette and senior offensive guard Garrett Brumfield.
"I was kind of shocked when I first heard it -- it was a dream come true," Moses told the media upon first receiving the offer from Miles last year. "I've always wanted to play for LSU since I was a kid, and now it's coming true in front of my eyes."
The only question now is whether Miles will still be in Baton Rouge come 2017. He seems to stir speculation over his LSU coaching future every spring and recently faced questions about his practices as the head man at Oklahoma State from 2001-04.
Maybe the knowledge that Moses is coming down Stadium Road is enough to keep everyone around. No one knows what position he'll play at the college level yet, but he's expected to be a game-changer whatever it may be.
