Lee Westwood claims a sneaky rips and shanks

It was the tournament before the U.S. Open, but turned out to be one of the most interesting (and downright batty) events of the season. While most were preparing for the second major championship of 2010, the St. Jude Classic provided us with some serious, serious drama. Who made rips, and who collapsed into shanks?

Rips

Lee Westwood: Call it the definitive "last man standing" syndrome on Sunday at the St. Jude, where Westwood calmly rolled in a 5-footer on the fourth playoff hole to claim his first PGA Tour win since 1998. He has been waiting a long time for this, and now jumps to the top of the list for favorites this week at Pebble Beach.

Shaun Micheel: Not since his second shot into the 72nd hole at Oak Hill in 2003 has Micheel been very relevant, but a closing 67 in Memphis catapulted the former major champion up to a tie for fourth.

Camilo Villegas: After a hot start to the season, Villegas has struggled, but a good week at Southwind was capped off by a Sunday 67 and has to have Camilo excited for the next few weeks.

Shanks

Robert Garrigus: Well, you know.

Robert Karlsson: Sure, he made the playoff, and finished with a hefty check, but Karlsson had a great chance to make a short par putt after Westwood missed his on the third playoff hole and couldn't convert. He will be thinking about that one for a very long time.

Casey Wittenberg: On Thursday I wrote the following about the 25-year-old local pro, after he opened with a sizzling 64: "Hopefully Wittenberg can keep it up, and continue to make 2010 the year of the young." He didn't, closing with a final-round 81 that included just six pars. Chalk it up as another disappointing week for Casey.
