Chad Johnson no longer exists. From now on, when referring to the Bengals wide receiver who wears #85, he'll have to be called Chad Ocho Cinco, for that is now his legal name.

It's been rumored for a while now. Miami radio station 790 The Ticket reported that it became official last night, and Will Brinson of the FanHouse confirmed it with Broward Country officials this morning.

Presumably, it will read "Ocho Cinco" across the back of Chad's jersey now, and there will be nothing Roger Goodell can do about it.

I don't even know what to say at this point. My initial reaction still stands, but now that it's real, I feel more sadness than anything. In all my years of watching sports, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone who needs attention quite as badly as Chad (sigh) Ocho Cinco. Jose Canseco, maybe. Ocho Cinco isn't quite the pity case that Canseco is, but he's on his way.

If he's going to call that much attention to himself, he better have a huge season.

That is just childishly pathetic. What happens if he gets traded and gets a new number.

He would probably offer the man wearing the number 85 on the new team an obscene amount of money to make sure he gets the number.

It does clear up the Johnson surplus in Cincy, at least. When will this be reflected in his player profile?

I love the fact that he's beating the no fun league at its own game.
He's playing the game by the rules and I promise goodell is hating the rules right about now.
Not only is changing his name an amazingly clever self promotion its good for football! people everywhere are going to be talking about the guy that changed his name to put it on his jersey.
Did he turn it into a show? Yep! Will it make the NFL money? Yep! Is the NFL better off for chad.. Ocho Cinco? another Yep!
I just love his desire to out wit the administration and do exactly what he wants inside the rules. I'm a huge colts fan and while I wouldn't want him on my team I'm entertained sitting back and watching what he does.

First- #10 beardown that was corny. kill urself
Second- I agree with #17 Shep D. its all about self promotion and beating the NFL. Anyone where really thinks that this will have a negative affect on his game is an idiot
Third- everyone is cryin about what if he gets traded and cant get his number. who f*cking cares. Then he will change his name back to Johnson. its not a hard thing to do.

this is just another case of the NFL being the "no fun league". Who does it harm to let him have ocho cinco on his jersey. The only reason players even wear numbers is so officials can tell them apart, and obviosly you are going to notice the moron with "ocho cinco" accross his back. The NFL should lighten up a little bit and give in and let players put on thier back whatever they want. If anything this will help raise revenue for the bengals who can now sell a new jersey for the same player.

I implore the Cincinnati Bengals to trade him to a team that has either retired the number 85 or has a veteran player who refuses to give up the number. DO IT! DO IT NOW!!

This is awesome. Who cares about "Johnson" anyways? It's probably some slave name right? Ocho Cinco is pretty sweet. It's the person that matters, not the name.
He seems like an OK guy, doesn't get into legal troubles, a very good receiver. And now he'll have a lot of fun and attention!
So what if he changes his number? He could be Ocho Uno or Ocho Ocho! That would be even better!
