Shutdown Corner - NFL

The artful use of a folded bill can get people past a long line at a club, seated quickly at a restaurant with a 45-minute wait or, as countless detective shows have demonstrated, a good piece of information from a cab driver with a hazy memory. As Chad Ochocinco(notes) found out today, it will not get you a call during an NFL game.

The impish Cincinnati Bengals receiver playfully tried to bribe an NFL official today during his team's game with its division rival, the Baltimore Ravens. With the Cincinnati Bengals up 14-3 in the third quarter, Ochocinco caught a 15-yard Carson Palmer(notes) pass near the sideline. The side judge ruled it a catch, but the Ravens contended that Ochocinco's foot was out of bounds. While the ref was under the hood looking at the replay, Ochocinco borrowed a dollar bill from an assistant and playfully tried to hand the one-spot to another official.

Ochocinco was smiling the entire time and, as you can see above, the official put a stop to the hijinks before they really began. It didn't work, the ref overturned the call on the field and ruled that the pass was incomplete.

You're either going to be in one of two camps with this. Either you think it's hilarious (like me) or you think that the mere appearance of bribery toward officials is uncouth and needs to be dealt with swiftly. Judging by his track record, Roger Goodell will fall firmly in the latter camp. Expect a fine for Ochocinco, even though nobody will seriously think that this was ever meant to be anything but a goof.

This is not an issue. He should be rewarded. Football is in the entertainment business. I'm entertained. The only reason i would watch a Bengals game is for him. He should sign with a UFL team. It would make me watch the league

Just a joke and Chad trying to have some fun. If anyone should have been fined $100,000 and suspended indefinitely Ray Lewis gets my vote for trying to take someones head off...literally!! No one was hurt by this. When you hear about some of b.s. that goes on with other players, I think we could use a few more Ocho Cincos!!!

Chad will most likely be fined for this. He has been for other antics.
The NO FUN LEAGUE. Let them have a little fun and stop acting so stuck up like this is a country club. Chad is backing it up on the field this year too (as are the surprising 6-2 Bengals) so people have even less room to hate the guy.

The least you can do is get the score right, I mean it's right there in the picture. 17-0, and it should've stayed that way the entire game but we had to choke in the second half and not score a single point. It has been a great year for Cincinnati football, let's hope it continues.

(After removing the stick from their hindquarters). The world needs more positive innocent humor. Jeeez.....There's always one out there to kill the fun, Who ever that may be, you bite.

Are you kidding, show some professionalism. i dont care if you're being funny in the locker room or on the side line or even talking [profane] to players on the other team. but jokingly bribing a referee, a person who HAS to take their job seriously. a person who would get fired for making a joke of any kind that would seem biased to one team. freakin bull [profane]. im so tired of players like chad JOHNSON and terrel owens. players that are starved for attention and that HAVE to be in the spot light. get back on the field and make some friggin plays.!!!!! stupid joke artists.

I think it's freakin' hilarious. He was clearly playing, and only an idiot would think he was seriously trying to bribe the ref with a dollar bill. Lighten the hell up, people. It's stupid, knee-jerk reactions like calling for him to be fined or suspended that prompt fans to call it the No Fun League

How low have we come when a little joke becomes a big issue. I'm not a big fan of Ochostinco, but I still had to grin when I saw the "bribe". I mean it was funny, harmless, and entertaining. So what's the big deal? Hey Goodell! Change your panty shield and lighten up on this totally non-issue.
