Battle for the #1 draft pick: Rams vs. Raiders

If you're already looking to put together your '09 mock draft, the Rams are really the only team that can claim they were in the same stratosphere of suck as the Raiders this past week. It's shaping up to be a heated battle.

The Eagles had their way with the Rams offensively, with the Rams defenders kindly allowing Donovan McNabb to pretend he was a young man again. Three hundred-yard receivers and a 81-yard rusher is an indication of an offense that didn't face a whole lot of resistance. And the Rams offense was even worse than their defense. Head coach (for a few more weeks, anyway) Scott Linehan openly admits that the same effort won't win a single game for the Rams this year.

The glass-half-full-view? Number one draft pick, baby!

That's the positive spin that Dallas Morning News columnist Rick Gosselin is putting on things in light of the Rams being shockingly awful in every phase of the game on Sunday. He's already planning what they can do with the first pick in the '09 draft.

Right now, the Rams are the worst team in the NFL, which would entitle them to the first overall pick in the 2009 draft. The best senior currently on that draft board is Georgia Tech defensive end Michael Johnson.

Just four more months of sitting through painful football, and then you can start looking ahead to another young stud defensive lineman. Feel the glory, Rams fans.

But I think it's awfully disrespectful of Gosselin to just ignore the Raiders like that. Their performance on Monday night was a clear indication that they're not letting go of that #1 overall pick without a fight. This has the potential to be an epic battle.

The only thing the Raiders are consistent at are sucking and getting high draft picks in the 1st round. Sometimes you wonder why idiots are still wasting their money on ridiculous costumes and tickets to see the Raiders.

It's a three-way race. You forgot about the Lions. The Lions will go 1-15 and Millen will be rewarded with a contract extension and a raise.

I can't wait for the Raiders to get the #1 pick in the spring, because I know Al Davis is going to pick someone stupid, like Beanie Wells or Tim Tebow. Is there anyway Goodell can sell the Raiders to the CFL or something?

I think Al Davis plans on always picking a RB or a QB with the first selection of the draft. Anyone else think at some point in the season New England is going to unleash LaMont Jordan and he'll have more yards than the entire Raiders team on that weekend? Detroit, Miami, and the overhyped Bengals will all challenge the Rams and the Raiders this season for next years top draft picks.

I know the raiders are one of the most penalized teams in football but I would be interesting to find out how many penalties are called against the team they are playing. I am not trying to make excuses for a bad football team but monday night the broncos commited some obvious penalties that were not called and could have changed the game.
    1) Down by the goal and ready to score the replay clearly showed that the linebacker covering Zach Miller had a hand full of his jersey while the ball was in the air. Miller missed the pass because he was being held. No penalty and no touchdown.
    2) Very next play, the lineman who sacked russel and force the fumble was clearly a yard offsides when the ball was snapped. 2 non calls and no score for the raiders.
    3) On a great punt return by higgins the 2 refs closest to the play did not call blocking in the back but the one 30 yards away did.
After all that happend with the NBA ref scandal you gotta start to wonder about calls that don't go fo the raiders.
Al Davis, please fire Lane Kiffin, admit your mistake and hire Brian Billick before the 49er's do.

Having been a Raider fan and saeson ticket holder for over 40 yrs now, I have to say they are embarassing. I'm not yet sold on Lane Kiffin or Rob Ryan, but in their defense they just don't have the talent to compete, making it hard to judge them. In the successful years they always had a great personnel dept. to evalue talent even though Al made the final call. They do have some talented players at certain positions but until they can control the line of scrimmage on both sides they're going to have problems. They have to take some pressure off of these young players. These "great db's" thay have can't do their jobs without some pressure up front. Linebackers? A joke. Why is Sam Williams still on this team? Watch how many times you see him run into the picture, even on special teams, after the play has ended. They need people to MAKE plays, not watch. It's not just Sam too many others do it too. Penalities? Some things seem to never change. 4 personal fouls, gimme a break. It'll be interesting to see what progress they make this year

Al Davis should have let Kiffin fire Rob Ryan.. His schemes are terrible.... I dont care how good the corners are if you put NO pressure on the QB the receivers will eventually get open.. Why werent we blitzing some linebackers? Jesus.. Make the QB make a quick decision and thats when our strong corners can make a play... BLITZ [profane]IT!!!

Ray Maulauga is the player the rams better draft regardless of where they end up. He is the next Seau without a doubt! Then, they would be wise to draft a big OT and big DT with the next two picks. Finally, they should add 5-6 quality free agents at Safety, WR and DL. Then, they will be .500 team.

having been a raiders fan since i first saw football. i know it's wrong and i dont want anything to happen to him, but until al davis passes away our team will be in trouble. he will not let the coaches or his staff do their job, he's always controlling everything, it's what ever al says goes. i just wish he'd reaize he should retire and sell the team plz...

John H, stop crying - there were blown calls on both sides of the ball. But since you brought it up I will bite
    1) Down by the goal and ready to score the replay clearly showed that the linebacker covering Zach Miller had a hand full of his jersey while the ball was in the air. Miller missed the pass because he was being held. No penalty and no touchdown.
Granted, the Broncos got away with one
    2) Very next play, the lineman who sacked russel and force the fumble was clearly a yard offsides when the ball was snapped. 2 non calls and no score for the raiders.
Wrong, replays showed it wasn't offsides - stop crying
    3) On a great punt return by higgins the 2 refs closest to the play did not call blocking in the back but the one 30 yards away did.
And yet again, replays clearly showed he shoved him in the back - Also, both of those officals standing there should be reviewed, that was horrible how both of them missed it
After all that happend with the NBA ref scandal you gotta start to wonder about calls that don't go fo the raiders.
Al Davis, please fire Lane Kiffin, admit your mistake and hire Brian Billick before the 49er's do.
Lol, Lane Kiffin, isn't the problem - The problem is AL Davis! Lane Kiffin wanted to fire Rob Ryan -Al Davis vetoed the decision.
Until Al Davis A) Passes away or B) Gives up control of the team - the Raiders will continue to suck. Notice how no high profile coach wants or is willing to accept the head coaching job for the Raiders? It is quite obvious Rob Ryan needs to go.

The Raiders used to be pro sports winningest team. That is all pro sports! Al Davis made them great, he now has destroyed them. From first to worst. The best thing for the Raiders would be for Al Davis to sell the team! Losing again to the Broncos is a flat out insult!

Wow I thought I was the only long time Raider fan that thinks Al Davis is the worst person in the Raiders Organization. Kiffin is a good coach, is main flaws are that he has no control over the team and that Al davis went out and spent way to much money in the off season on Harris, Wilson, and lets not forget WALKER(what the F**k was that all about.) Smarter move would have been going after Faneca and Woody like the JETS. Remember 2 years ago Rob Ryan had one of the best Ds in the game. All the great team have proven that you need an OFFENSIVE LINE to win games. One more thing Post #7 Fargas and Mcfadden will both run for more yards this season than Lamont Jordan...smartest more OAKLAND made this year was telling him to hit the highway

the raiders defensive schemes are terrible, they dont have a d-line to get enough pressure for them to work and no db can win 100% of one on one battles...what shocks me is how free agents are attracted to this garbage pit of football...and how asomugha didnt want out....how can u be mad at somebody if they wanna have 1 winning season in their career? same with the rams....scrap the defensive schemes and go back to the basics: like tackling and running a zone coverage
