If you've ever wondered about what losing $35,000 means to a player who has made nearly $300 million (pre-taxes) in his NBA lifetime (that's not even including Louisiana State), then witness Shaquille O'Neal's(notes) reaction to news of his fine for criticizing the refs last weekend:
Now, one-twentieth of $35,000 would change my life in hundreds of good ways, I'm sure the same goes for many of you, so you wouldn't be faulted for gritting your teeth there.
But we have to get real, here. Shaq's a very rich man, and this fine is a drop in his bucket. And with the knowledge that all of this money goes to charity (that's what the NBA does with its fines) and that idea he got his money's worth in complaining about the refs (though he did foul out Tuesday night), you can't blame Shaq's hilarious bit of levity in the Boston Celtic locker room.
I mean, why ask why? Try Bud Dry.
