    It was a foul but that won't help over the no calls all game long and ist won't help a team unable to do the necessary work. You should enter another answer: Why bother?

    My screen says that there are 71 votes with 50% choosing no call and 51% choosing foul 2 FT. I'm no statistician (ok - actually I kind of am), something doesn't seem correct about that...

    Sure, Fisher fouled Brent, though not in the act of shooting. Spurs deserved two free throws...
    ...until I found out, Brent traveled before he was fouled. See here: http://i32.tinypic.com/8vvq4m.jpg
    You can clearly see it, steping his left foot back meant his right foot became the pivot foot, and he lifted his pivot foot before he dribbled. Clear travel violation. Maybe that's the reason for the noncall?

    What are these guys talking about? When your defender is in the air jump into him? This is the crap they destroy the game with. Try to get an honest foul or let it be.
    Barry could have used just a step sideways and Fisher would not have had a chance. Instead he tried to dirve into him. He didn't even shy away from anything. There's only one player I know who did so.

    It was clearly a foul, it would have been to harsh to give it for continuation though. 2 Ft's should have been given.
    It was a bad play by the Spurs i thought though, why was Barry recieving the ball so far out with that much time left.

    ... until I saw this. http://i32.tinypic.com/8vvq4m.jpg
    Clear travel violation (he stepped his left foot back, making his right foot the pivot foot, and he lifted his pivot foot before the dribble) on Barry before the foul. I can't justify a foul if something as basic as a travel violation occurs before the contact.

    All this crying and analyzing that everyone is doing is silly! We could analyze the whole game and find a lot of "non calls" on both sides, but either way the end of the story is the same.......
    Spurs LOST, their time is up, and it's all about the LAKERS BABY!!!
    Can't wait until Thursday!!

    Thank God somebody else realizes this! The idea of initiating contact when you get your defender in the air is what I hate the most about the pro game today. That should not be a foul call. They need to change that rule so that if you manage to get your defender in the air, the only purpose is to go around them.

    You're right about the travel Joseph, but they should have called it then. That's to blame on the referees, mistaking "let them play" with "don't call anything". At least you cannot call them inconsistent.

    @Laker Lover:
    I always thought this blog WAS about analysis? Can't wait for KD's thoughts on Game 4.
    But all the controversies aside, LA played great. Outrebounded the Spurs 46-37, 13 offensive rebounds leading to 20+ 2nd chance points, Spurs were out hustled, hence, they tired out in the end, no question. I expect that kind of analysis from KD, though.

    I hate these fouls. Technically, yes it should have been called. They'll call that at any other time during the game and sometimes with the game on the line.
    In my opinion those types of fouls should never be called - where the defender is in the air and the offensive player creates all the contact. The offensive player should take advantage of that defensive mistake by taken an open shot, instead of getting to the line. Of course you can't begrudge players by taking advantage of what the refs are going to give them, the solution is to stop making that play a no-lose situation and the way to do that is not call the foul.

    I am a laker fan, in some games it would have been a foul, but I saw many no calls last night. The only reason this is even up for discussion is because the two costly mistakes made by Kobe. I think last night kind of humbled Kobe because he was able to see the tides turn in less than a minute. If anyone remembers what Reggie Miller did to New York in 20 second they would play those last few minutes. It was a good game but Lakers will do away with the spurs on Thursday.

    The officiating in the NBA is almost like watching the WWF, what a joke!! They actually seem to not know how to call a foul a foul, or call a foul when there is no foul, it has become a game of bad calls being made up for by calling another bad foul or "letting the guys play" or some other lame reason. Call the game the way the rules say it is supposed to be called. I have followed the NBA since '66 and stuff like this is making it more and more difficult to get into the games. Stern should do something about this because it is turning people away from basketball.

    Popovich and Barry handled this situation correctly. They said the call shouldn't have been made and accepted the fact they played a woeful game and acted as though the whole ordeal is a non-issue. All the fans should follow in their footsteps and realize no amount of bickering can alter the outcome of the game. Barry was hit, but it's a terrible situation to put an official.
    Please stop suggesting the NBA could even possibly be fixed. If the officials were trying to throw the game for the Lakers, it would have been Duncan in foul trouble, not Fisher and Odom in the first half and Kobe would have been to the line more than the zero trips he actually made. Overall, the officials did a decent job and let the ending play out without their influence. I, for one, always find that more entertaining than a free throw contest to determine a victor.

    it's a good no call. if barry would have leaned into Fisher while Fisher was in the air, then a foul should have been called. with the game on the line like that, you got to make a better decision. just for the record, i dont like the Spurs, or the Lakers. i just call it like i see it

    @j.b.: Agreed. Although I have to admit, for a league which follows its rules and regulations to the letter (e.g., suspensions, the clock controversy in the Magic @ DET sem final), they sure treat unwritten rules with that much priority when in fact there is no "letter" to base them on.

    barkeley, miller & smith were right in their assessment of the no-call. barry should've gone up for the shot as soon as fish came into contact. clearly he tried to get into a better shooting position AFTER the contact by fish and that was why the refs did not call the foul. also, to say that ONE no-call cost could have changed the outcome of the game.....rewind to about 5 seconds before that last play by barry. fish's shot clearly hit the rim before hitting horry on the way out of bounds. the lakers should have been given a new clock rather than possession being given to the spurs. lastly, IT'S THE FINALS...NO REFEREE WOULD WANT TO MAKE A CALL THAT WOULD ALLOW ONE TEAM TO WIN OVER THE OTHER ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT ONE SIDE HAD OUTPLAYED, OUTCLASSED, OUT-HUSSLED THE OTHER.

    @The truth:
    If you see the GIF I posted earlier (http://i32.tinypic.com/8vvq4m.jpg, yeah, weird file extension), you will see that Barry caught the ball and had complete control of the ball, stopped, faked fisher, traveled, and got the contact. Even if there was a little slide to Barry's fake-out, it doesn't mean there was no traveling. I've seen traveling calls even when there's slippage (pardon my english)
    I agree with KD in his Game 4 analysis post though, this was a game where the better team won and all this excess baggage that is the officiating just ruins enjoying this great game. Laker fan or Spur fan, you would have to agree with that.

    ii might have been a foul but the referees did the same thing to suns when sun went back to spurs home court they took suns right out of the game. There were a lot of a bad calls in the game to start the game off but the lakers hold on, when sun could not. The same thing happen last year in the finals bowen foul lebron, that was going to win or beat the spurs, but the call was not call, spurs this year got the end of the stick. But I like the no call. It was not a foul, I didn't see it.

    Cry Cry Cry-
    Bad no call deserves another.
    The Zebras missed an equally important call seconds before. Fisher last shot did hit the rim and 24 sec should reset. Lakers win game over. Lakers will ran out the clock but Bryant had to put a shot with 2 sec left. If you see the replay Fisher ball clearly hit the rim it altered thats why Horry couldnt get it and bounced off his foot instead.
    Biased ,horrible and refs against the Spurs PlEASE.
    Please watch the replay of the whole game, Spurs got outplayed, got all the calls and never got the lead.
