From the Marbles - NASCAR

Imagine having to spend a large part of your day answering the same exact questions, over and over. It'd get pretty numbing, wouldn't it? You'd get sick of it, right? Okay, now imagine having money and fame for doing the thing you love. Now the whole answering-questions bit gets a little easier to deal with, right? You'd think, but then that's not always the case. Exhibit #500,000 in the case of Athletes vs. Common Freakin' Courtesy is Juan Pablo Montoya, who put on this wonderful little performance yesterday as he was about to do an interview with KTXL in Sacramento:

It was an idiot move by Montoya, without a doubt. (I understand the sportscaster's frustration, though I think he's overselling a bit how hard it is to access these guys.) Here's hoping someone sits JPM down and reminds him that dealing with the PR aspect of this job is, you know, kind of a necessary one. Deal with it, man, and show both your fans, your team and your sport some more respect.

(Hat tip to Jeff Gluck for the find.)

That sportscaster is a baby, he's like the kid who says an athlete sucks because he wouldn't sign an autograph for him, even though the guy just spent 3hours signing autographs. Juan had probably been doing interviews for hours and eventually it's time to go.

It was 5:01....Do we know how late he might have been doing the interviews. From my experience Nascar drivers are always 10-15 late when doing an appearance. Do they ever stay past their time? I've never seen one to stay.

haha I love it. The guy drives for a living not interviewing every last news agency in the country. That's exactly why his fans like him. No bullsh!t. No excuses. No more interviews!

I wonder if a driver that had roots in NASCAR may have a different appreciation for what he has and not blow off the last interview like that. I just don't see Carl Edwards doing that. It's exactly the kind of behavior I would expect from an F1 driver or a driver who's brother or daddy got them the ride in NASCAR. Just goes to show that you can't buy class.

That was bad . but how many worse things have the nfl or nba or any other sports stars do and the reporter never says anything negative about it. if that was bad then the news people ought to report the rapes and shooting and say same thing then . it just got the reporter made so he made it his priority to make it news thats all.how long was he doing the reports who knows the whole story.

I think it was funny. Didn't they say he had been waiting for 15 min and when they got to him it was 5:01pm which was when he was scheduled to be done?

The point is, this interview was on obligation chi wa wa had to do. The interviews are required publicity duties once a driver makes the Chase. As the reporter stated the spot was set up BY Nascar to publicize the Chase. This one is on Juan regardless of any other driver's previous behavior.

That was almost as bad as what kayne west did to Taylor Swift at the vma's. As the sportscaster said nascars popularity is falling, this act is not helping matters any. Maybe ewdards will take jpm and himself out of the race tomorrow.

So Chase, was it funny that he had an obligatory interview to give to promote the Chase? He showed not just the Nascar fan, but anyone watching their nightly news or evening news or whatever it was, that he was acting like a spoiled self-centered jerk. Because that's what the average viewer saw. And I like Juan. National press is not easy for Nascar to come by. This hurt the sport. And hurt it big time.

Maybe he was, and if he's been on his own time fine. Cme- I'm saying this looked bad, not to just Nascar fans, that are use to it, But ma and pa and their children just watching TV. I get his reasons for it. Hell I've been one,.. if not the biggest defender of Kyle for not speaking. I'm sure even the most patient and polite drivers get tired of the same questions over and over and over again. But ,.and here's the whole enchilada, Juan was obligated to give an interview for the Chase. He quite publicaly said, I'm done, it's 5:01.

Well Brini - I guess Montoya just isn't your kind of guy. Personally, I like his brand of honesty however brash it may be. He has never been politically correct or wanted to please some handler whether it be in F1 or Nascar. He was done. Simple, end of story. That's really the way it is for him, simple and to the point. It's not like he went on a Tony Tirade and lambasted the reporter ( which I like too ). As for hurting Nascar? I hardly think so. Methfield maybe but not blowing off an interview. Hell, I'd like to see the drivers punch a reporter or two for asking the most mundane questions over and over and over. Coughtonystewartcougharmorall...coughmarblescoughSTPcoughrichardpettycough.

Brini - Initially after reading the article and watching the video yes, I laughed. Behind the scenes, what I got was that JPM had been doing interviews all day, he was tired answering the same ole questions and said this was hard. He had waited 15 min for them and his scheduled time was to finish at 5pm. They weren't ready, so at 5:01 he said I'm done. Now, what if the news schedule ran out of time and didn't have time for his interview and they dismissed him? It works both ways. Now, he has to account for his behavior to his team owner and sponsors. Do I think he was right or wrong? I really don't care. But, maybe people will tune it to see him race, whereas, if he had given the interview they may have not been interested?
