He was called the pound-for-pound king by many in the 1990's, now Roy Jones Jr. is beginning to resemble a pauper. The 40-year-old is 4-4 since 2004 and he seems to be enamoured with fighting a mixed martial artist. UFC said thanks but no thanks earlier in the week. Then a report emerged saying Showtime and Strikeforce had struck a deal with Jones:

ProMMA.info released this headline early Thursday:

"Strikeforce agrees to Nick Diaz vs. Roy Jones Jr. in MMA fight"

When questioned by Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer, Strikeforce chief Scott Coker said he didn't know where that came from:

"We haven't really talked about it and I really don't even know how serious it is," said Coker. "The question is does he want to fight in MMA or does he want the fight just in boxing?"

Coker said he had spoken with Team Diaz earlier that morning and they did express an interest in a Jones v. Diaz MMA fight. So the door is open slightly, right? Wrong, Ken Hershman from Showtime jumped on the teleconference, closed the door and nailed it shut:

"That would be a very, very long shot of ever happening on Showtime," chuckled Hershman.

Is Jones' price tag too high?

"It has nothing to do with the money. I think it's an insult to the integrity of mixed martial arts to think that Roy Jones or any professional boxer could just come in and fight Nick Diaz in a mixed martial arts context. In a boxing context, it's completely different."

Hershman, who oversees the boxing and MMA programming on Showtime, said freak shows are not what the network is about:

"It's not the strategy we're employing. I don't see the need to combine the two (brands) at the moment. We're marketing and promoting these shows with peaceful co-existence. I wouldn't want to go down that path just now."

White said earlier in the week that Jones mattered 15 years ago and he must've spent all his money. Again a message to Anderson Silva to stop talking about a fight with Jones.

Oh, Roy........ please don't (further) desecrate your legacy. It is YOUR legacy to do with as you will, but from a selfish fan perspective, I don't want to see you fight any more than Ken Shamrock.

Everyone is trying to capitalize on MMA's popularity. He's not the only one. Kurt Angle, at 40-something years old, trains at an MMA academy in Pittsburgh during his off time. It must be hard for some of these amateur wrestlers who went into pro wrestling 10-20 years ago to wonder what it would have been like if they tried MMA. They made have made slightly less money at first but the schedule would have been so much easier!

Roy is kinda dumb for trying to get into MMA the way he is. At least people like Bobby Lashley trained for MMA and not just talk about how he wants to get into it. Sure he has boxing.. but that's it.. Boxing. No one is going to take him seriously as long as he's not even attempting to train.

People from other sports wanting to jump into MMA is ridiculous (as is MMA fighters wanting to be boxers) especially as they seem to want to jump in at the high level. I thought Michael Jordan playing baseball would be enough to stop people getting ideas above their station.
I mean what's next, David Beckham wanting to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers?

Ok, I had respect for yahoo sports but after this article I'm starting to question it. Read the Espn article about the stupidity of what's going on. It's titled Roy Jones and the snowball effect. Roy wants to fight Anderson Silva and that's it. Somehow there are now reports that Roy is trying to go to Strikeforce. First, they don't have enough money to give the ex pound for pound king and second, they don't even have enough of a following to promote the thing properly. Ken Hershman says he is trying to keep any insult away from the sport of MMA, then why are his fingerprints all over Kimbo Slice???? I guess backyard brawlers are ok but not olympic fighter of the decade champions aren't. These articles are a joke and I am just trying to inform the people reading this article of the truth. Tisk tisk yahoo sports

The only way this fight would be remotely fair is if they fought under boxing rules. Otherwise, Silva would destroy Jones in less than a minute. No way I would pay $50-60 for this fight. I'm sure Jones is just looking for a big payday cuz he's probably blown all of this money.

I agree with Ron M, Jones was one of the greatest "boxers" of all time but would really have no chance against a professional MMA fighter, at the same time a MMA fighter would have a hard time against a pro boxer under boxing rules, but I guess somebody eventually will match up great fighters of both sports. I love both sports so I would probably watch it but sure as hell would not pay 50-60 bucks for it.

The MMA cant afford to have a boxer fight a mma guy (by boxing rules) ...
it would look like the mma needs help from boxing ........
The case would be that they dont , but I think it would sell tickets and make alot of money !
With that said Dana " NUTSK " White or any other promoter couldnt live down a boxer beating a mma guy by using mma rules.
If the boxer loses who cares it was by mma rules and thats their outlet.
In the start of this ,Roy wants to BOX silva NOT MMA rules,
now somehow it turned into mma rules with the doper diaz .
and DUHHHH ....to say Roy is looking for a big pay day ............NO..CRAP ! WHAT boxer or mma guy isnt ?
Dont you think since their prints are on Slice is the reason they dont want to promote this ?
Maybe they learned their lesson..ummm...could that be it ?
Maybe you should take up your cause in the political blogs arena ....
where it would do some help and where it might do some good instead of wasting your time on sports blogs !
So now its time to get off your play rocking horse .........and stop pretending to be Napoleon......... aka Cesar and take your meds from the loony bin go to sleep.
I dont know why its ridiculous for a guy to go to other sport...
Jim Brown did it he was a all-star in lacrosse and was great in basketball, track .
How many guys who played basketball went to the NFL and did ok.
Jim Thorpe he played in the NFL ..MLBaseball or what is now know as Steriodball, Pro. Basketball.
So what if they want to change sports or try something diffrent who cares you never know what might happen ...
and the Steelers wouldnt take Beckman ...Raiders would scoop him up as a kicker/ WR........
Some of you goofs are funny ...who cares if they want to try mma ...
.its not like mma going to make them rich.
Hell pro poker player make more money than mma guys and you dont get jacked in the poker room..lol
So it cant be the money !
and I dont know if any of you noticed but whats it say for mma when the wwe has more fans watching on PFV than mma or boxing or both combine.
Heck college football has more fans at a game .....
so I dont know how you determine popularity and people cashing in on it ....whos trying to cash in besides Roy ?
do you compare who gets paid more ?...
or who has more fans show up at a game or match or fight ?.....
    who sell more merchandise ?
or the biggest growth % since starting?

Seriously no one except maybe Nut wants to see a washed up Roy Jones fight. If they did, we wouldn't be having this stupid discussion. Silva on the other hand has a number of huge fights to choose from after Forrest. GSP, Rampage, Machida. I also think Maia would be a compelling matchup for Silva. His style of BJJ is very aggressive and could pose some serious problems for Silva.

washed up? are you kidding me? that man will $hit bigger than you on his deathbed. no one could handle his power or speed.(sounds alot like silva) both men are true warriors. if you could turn RJJ back 10 years he would punch silva's head loose from his body and break ribs til silva folded.

MMAfan, Jones is washed up as an elite level boxer. Maybe you've missed his last several boughts. He's a shell of what he once was. He's 40 years old. Ya can't beat father time. Sure, in a straight boxing match Jones would easily win, now and 10 years ago. But we're talking MMA and he would have no chance against Silva. Everyone knows that including Jones. He will never agree to fight Silva under MMA rules. Unless of course he has a death wish.

Steve W, be careful when calling someone an idiot, Elite xc was Showtime's brand while Kimbo was fighting. They didn't pick up Strikeforce until after Elite XC folded. You're usually not a bad blogger but you really F'ed this one up. Go apologize to Cesar

ive always been a huge fan of jones jr. i think he was one of the greatest. he still has a lot of skill and fight in him, no doubt. i think anyone would be interested in watching silva fight jr. no matter what the fight. obviously a boxing match wouldnt be as lop sided as an mma match. or one would think so. i do believe that jr. should have a shot at mma, if any wrestler can fight mma why not an accomplished boxer? ive always said i'd rather see some bad a$$ muay thai guy from thailand get a quick pass into mma before all these wrestlers just because they were good in college. a guy like jr. would bring a fight, thats for sure, and it would be a fight that interests everyone. silva called jones out also, although it was in respectful manner.

    MMAniac,
You are not antithetical to Nut! So, chump, does that mean you are Nut’s little “Cupcake?” Anytime anyone else agrees with Nut (who is a million times smarter than you, douchebag), you accuse them of being a homosexual and run your mouth like a retard. In your little pathetic world, any agreement with Nut automatically is tantamount to gay infatuation. You spout homophobic nonsense ad nauseam. This is, of course, absurd and ridiculous. And it also lends evidence to one of Nut’s basic themes: MMA appeals to white trash types, like you, who have little by way of fighting IQ to offer, but who spout homophobic slurs when others disagree with your dogmatism. (This is a common strategy of retards: “You disagree with me, well, you must be a f-a-g!”) Your hilarious and have no right to assess the merits of other bloggers, so go and apologize to Steven W! And don’t bother pulling the next white-trash move—challenging me to a fight. You’re a joke.

So Nutcracker? If it's not for cash, why would Roy want to fight? Boredom? The challenge? Come on, you don't want to admit he blew through all his money - and will go down as just another embarrassment to 'the peoples'.
I'll bet it also grinds you that Chuck Liddell has more money than Roy and will continue to make tons, while Roy keeps floating stupid fight ideas out. He probably wants to be on Dancing with the Stars or The Apprentice too... :-)
