Player Notes
Cody Allen took an epic blown save and a loss to the White Sox by coughing up five runs --including a grand slam -- while retiring only one batter in the ninth inning on Wednesday.

Advice: Called upon to protect a 7-5 lead, Allen promptly sank the ship. He started out fine, fanning Justin Morneau. That is when the craziness started. He gave up an infield single to Todd Frazier, then another infield single to J.B. Shuck. He then walked Tim Anderson before giving up yet another weak single to Dioner Navarro. Then Allen hung a curveball right over the center of the plate that Adam Eaton deposited in the right field cheap seats. Allen really only made one mistake -- two if you count the walk. It was one of those dink, dink, dink, BOOM nights. Allen has been very good all year and is likely to continue seeing most of the save chances in Cleveland despite tonight's shellacking. Andrew Miller is a threat but manager Terry Francona seems to prefer using the lights-out lefty in situational spots while Allen gets most of the save chances.

Cody Allen converted his 23rd save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning Tuesday versus the White Sox.

Advice: Andrew Miller got the seventh and eighth innings after Corey Kluber went six, and Allen closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Allen has recorded three saves to Miller's one since the Indians acquired the left-hander, as manager Terry Francona continues to play matchups late in the game.
