Player Notes
Pirates signed 3B/1B David Freese to a two-year contract extension with a club option for 2019.

Advice: He'll get $6.25 million in 2017 and $4.25 million in 2018, and the club option for 2019 is worth $6 million with a $500,000 buyout. Freese was a nice offseason pickup for the Pirates on a one-year, $3 million free agent contract and is now locked up with Pittsburgh through at least his age-35 season at some fairly reasonable rates. The 33-year-old currently owns a .276/.355/.437 batting line with 12 home runs and 49 RBI in 107 games. He's made 58 starts at third base and 26 starts at first base.

David Freese clubbed a two-run homer in a loss Friday versus the Marlins.

Advice: His two-run blast off Tom Koehler gave the Pirates the lead in the fourth inning in what was a back-and-forth affair. The Pirates were ultimately on the losing side. Freese is still doing most of his damage against left-handers, but he’s batting .282/.363/.447 with 12 homers and 48 RBI through 105 games on the year. His .810 OPS is his highest since his All-Star season with the Cardinals in 2012.
