Player Notes
Clayton Kershaw (back) has not been cleared for throwing.

Advice: Kershaw had a checkup with Dr. Robert Watkins last week but was apparently told to remain idle as he attempts to rehab a disc herniation in his lower back. There is no timetable for the ace left-hander's return to the Dodgers' rotation and it is possible he will wind up needing season-ending surgery.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed hope that Clayton Kershaw (back) will not need surgery.

Advice: Roberts acknowledged that Kershaw's recent setback during a simulated game -- the ace was shut down indefinitely after feeling discomfort on Tuesday -- has increased the chance that he might have to undergo season-ending surgery. But nothing has been decided yet. He was diagnosed with a mild disc herniation in his lower back near the end of June and didn't feel right after a simulated game this past weekend. Fantasy owners who were riding Kershaw's brilliant 2016 campaign toward potential championships will just have to cross their fingers.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Clayton Kershaw (back) "didn't feel great" after throwing a simulated game this weekend and has been shut down indefinitely.

Advice: Asked about a possible return timetable, Roberts replied: "Uncertain." Kershaw had been aiming to return to the Dodgers' rotation later this week, but he's been battling lingering discomfort since throwing 60 pitches in a simulated setting on Saturday. Julio Urias will be called up from the Triple-A Oklahoma City bullpen to make a spot start Thursday versus the Nationals.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated Sunday that Clayton Kershaw (back) would not rejoin the rotation on Thursday.

Advice: That's when his spot comes up next. However, the good news is that Roberts didn't rule out Kershaw returning sometime next weekend in St. Louis. Kershaw threw a 60-pitch simulated game Saturday and the club wants to see how he recovers over the next few days before determining the next step for the left-hander.

Clayton Kershaw (back) threw 60 pitches in a simulated game on Saturday.

Advice: He threw at maximum effort while mixing in all of his pitches. The Dodgers haven't announced what his next step will be but there's a strong chance Kershaw will be returning to the starting rotation next week. The left-hander was diagnosed with a herniated disc in his lower back last month but has made a quick recovery. He was pitching like an MVP before the injury, going 11-2 with a stunning 1.79 ERA over his first 16 outings.
