Wainwright held the Giants to one run and six hits while striking out a career-high 12 in the Cardinals' 2-1, 10-inning win Wednesday night. Advice: Wainwright's previous career high was nine strikeouts in a win at Milwaukee on May 26. His total Wednesday was the Cardinals' best for a nine-inning game since Chris Carpenter fanned 13 on June 13, 2006, at Pittsburgh. Wainwright has struck out 68 in 72 2-3 innings over his last 10 starts, going 5-4 with a 2.72 ERA in that stretch. |

RHP Adam Wainwright fanned 12, allowed one run in nine innings and did about as well as possible in the eighth inning, begrudging the Giants just one run when they had the bases loaded and nobody out.
Wainwright finished with 122 pitches, but manager Tony La Russa pointed out that, according to pitching coach Dave Duncan, Wainwright throws the fewest pitches among the starters in warming up for a game. Wainwright also will have an extra day off before his next start, Wednesday in Milwaukee. |

Wainwright held the Giants to one run on six hits in nine innings of work Wednesday. He struck out 12 and walked three. Recommendation: Note the nine innings were not a complete game, as the game lasted 10 frames. The 12 strikeouts were his first foray into double-digit strikeouts, but his 122 pitches were hardly strange territory. He has gone 99+ pitches in all but two starts, and he has crossed the 110 line seven times. He got the no-decision in this one, as the Cards' offense needed 10 innings to get two runs. |
