Say goodbye to any hopes you had for the Detroit return of Captain Caveman.
As first reported by MLB.com's Jason Beck, Johnny Damon(notes) appeared in Anaheim on Monday night with his hair fashioned into a mohawk. The cut came courtesy of rookie catcher Alex Avila(notes) and Damon cited a number of reasons for the new 'do.
Among them: He got the idea from Mariners reliever Brandon League(notes), he wanted to inspire the Tigers during this 11-game road trip out west and he found that his thirst for long hair was "gone out of my system."
That last urge is no doubt a product of the Steinbrenner brainwashing, but opting for the Mohawk could be a sign Damon's rebel side still lives. Well, as much of a rebel as one can be after opting for the type of faux-hawk popularized by David Beckham. (There aren't any wire photos or Twitpics of Damon's head last night, but judging from watching Damon during the game, he still has plenty of hair on the sides of his head.)
Damon's partial ploy also wasn't completely successful in firing up the troops. Dontrelle Willis(notes) pitched well, but the punchless Tigers still lost 2-0 to the Angels. Combine the defeat with Damon's lack of power so far this season — no homers and only two doubles in 52 plate appearances — and maybe we'll get to see a preferred Mr. T look sooner rather than later.
Arnold Jackson would no doubt want it that way.
