Big League Stew - MLB

I think most of the baseball blogosphere missed this sad story when Mockingbird posted it earlier in the month, but the World Series ring that Derek Bell won with the Blue Jays in 1992 was up for sale on eBay. However, the final bid of $7,499 did not meet the reserve price when the auction ended over the weekend. The ring had a Buy-It-Now price of almost $17K.

Bell, who made almost $27 million during his 11-year career, has had his share of drug problems since retiring, so no jokes to be found here. Here's hoping he can turn it around.

    Having big $ at such a young age will destroy if careful management and responsibilities are not carried out,many athletes are broke within a few years after retirement,big spending on houses,cars,boats and 14 kids from 14 different woman has put many an athlete living under an overpass till their pensions kick in which is 5 years after retirement...

    It has been reported that over 60% of retire NBA players are broke. It's not a sad story it's a common story. I tell my wife this all the time when she complains about athletes salaries. i always say; i bet they end up busted and broke.
    As for Derek Bell, the picture you show is clearly a person who has had a crack pipe premanently attached to their mouth for years. He's in a permanent squint from the lighter and the pipe. Is he blind in that one eye? No one should feel sorry for this fool.

    thepittsburghkid beat me to it. His ring didn't know it had to compete in the auction, so it shut it down and sat a boat instead.

    Welcome to the real world, Mr. Bell where 75% of the population struggles with money matters........and you had 20 million + more than the rest of us. Can't feel bad for ya, tho.

    Too bad truly. Sad that anyone succumbs to addictions. Sadder still to see the heartless soul of "fans" who are secretly glad a guy that made more money in a couple of years than they will make in their lifetime fail. Which story is the sadder one? Derek Bell and his drug/money problems, or the pathetic public who would rather crow over someone's misfortunes than empathize with another human being who is obviously in need of help.

    ya i feel real bad for a guy who had the privilege to play a game that most of us would kill to good enough to play on a professional level. Add to the fact he made 27 million doing it and is now broke, well thats too damn bad for him. I'll feel sorry for him as I rise at 4 am tommorow to work a 14 hr day for about 1/ 270 th of what he made during his career. Maybe he should go ask his crack dealer for a loan seeing as how he's probably the richest guy he knows now. What a complete degenerate.

    @16
    Why? Because I say a guy who had it all; money, talent, fame; is an idiot for wasting all on crack?
    Who are you? His brother?
    Read the other posts. You are in the minority. It's only you and #14 the priest with any kind of sympathy for him.
    You want to know how to not blow 27 million on drugs? Don't light up that first pipe. Millions of people manage to do that every day.

    Where is the players union on this ? Don't know the full story on Derek, but it would seem to me that some of his ex teammates and friends probally tried to help but a drug user knows everything except help. This is just another sad story that happens everyday in the real world, hopefully he gets help and turns his life around, because he is on that road to either prison or death.
