Big League Stew - MLB

Some of you probably think I'm overreacting to what appears to be the done deal of Jim Edmonds clearing waivers and becoming a Chicago Cub at some point today. Some of you may think I am inappropriately speaking for an entire nation of Cubs fan that does not share the same petty dislike and stubborn stance toward putting him in Chicago pinstripes and Wrigley Field's home locker room.

To those accusations, I offer the below reactions from a few of the biggest Cubs' blogs, a group of influentials who haven't referred to Edmonds as anything but Lassie since he was actually an impact-type player for the Cardinals. (I'll let you adults research that nickname on your own.)

Goat Riders of the Apocalypse: "Since Edmonds is the newest Cub, he shall be designated as a rookie for the duration of the '08 season (even if real rookies later join the squad). Consequently, he shall be forced to wear women's garments on all road trips, and he shall be taunted and bullied before every game. ...come to think of it, this is not unlike his normal routine."

View From The Bleachers: "I just pictured him in a Cubs uniform.  His evil was burning through it like in Raiders of the Lost Ark when the Ark burned the Nazi symbol off the box it was in.  (That’s not a perfect analogy because in that instance the good was burning through the evil, but the visual is right.)"

Hire Jim Essian: "Jim Hendry, you’ve done an awful lot of dumb things in your tenure as the Chicago Cubs’ general manager. You signed Neifi Perez a couple of times. You thought Shawn Estes belonged in a starting rotation. You traded Kyle Farnsworth right after a crap year instead of right after a good year. You ate that whole cheesecake that had been sitting out on the counter for a week, even though I told you that the top shouldn’t feel slimy. I’ve forgiven you for most of those things. But so help you God, if you sign Jim Edmonds, you are dead to me."

Desipio: "Old Lassie’s a winner. He’s got some nice postseason numbers (in 61 postseason games) .277/.365/.523 with 13 homers, 42 RBI. That’s great. You know who else has nice postseason numbers? Mickey Mantle. He can’t play anymore either."

While some of you who don't live along I-55 may have never heard of this dislike for Edmonds before, be assured that it's one of those rivalry byproducts in which one single player becomes the living object and target for all the negative feelings from the other side. Think Steve Spurrier for the rest of the SEC when he was coaching Florida. Think Tyler Hansbrough for all of those who hate UNC's powder blue or J.J. Redic for everyone who hates Duke's Blue Devil.

When it comes to Edmonds, he's that player that Chicago fans have always loved to hate. Funny thing is, now that he's here, he's going to continue to play the same role. Jerry Seinfeld once said that all we're doing is rooting for laundry, but I'm pretty sure Cubs fans are going to prove him wrong on this one.

Is it bad to cheer that a player on your own team breaks his leg?

Maybe they're looking for another punching bag for Zambrano since they got rid of Barrett last year.

I know what Jimmy is up to. I always thought Edmonds was a true Cardinal at heart...since he couldn't help us on our team, he's parading around the rest of the NL sabotaging their teams! He's already ruined playoff chances for a once-thought contender, and now he has set his sights upon arch-rival Chicago to unseat them from 1st. Why else would he take the abuse that's likely to pour down upon him in Wrigley? Thanks Jimmy, what a team player! We look forward to seeing you back in Busch for two more series! Feel free to use the home team lockers when you get here....

Isn't this the fate of all Chicago Sports. We always get the guys that were once good, and are now washed up. Why don't we try to get them when they are in their prime?

Is Felix Pie Corey Patterson's evil twin? He has the same swing and approach at the plate. He needs to be sent down ONE MORE TIME to try to get it into his head that he needs to shorten his swing. We then would need another outfielder. Yea, I've hated the Edmonds' (I mean Cardinals) too. But, it's a cheap bandaid until a better deal comes along.

why bother? i guess this means we are giving up on pie?
just give reed johnson a full time roster spot and go after another left hand pitcher and call it a done deal.
. . oh yeah, and the girl on the left is a harlot.

I guess people forgot that he's a Left handed bat that would be helpful to the Cubs lineup. It wouldn't be the first guy that the Cubs got who was a former Cardinal at the end of his career (Gaetti). I'll admit it would be weird to see him in Cubbie Blue. Atleast Big Z won't have to hit him after he hit a 3-run homer off of him. If he flops, its not like the cubs won't have Reed Johnson already on the major league roster, and Felix Pie will have gotten more at bats in Iowa to become a more sure left-handed bat and we just cut our losses (Edmonds). But let me finish off by tossing this out there: If we're going to sign an old left-handed Center-fielder, What's wrong with Kenny Lofton? Lefthanded hitter in the 1-2 slot with playoff experience with the Indians, Braves, Cubs, and Indians again. I'm sure I missed other teams he got to the playoffs with. To top it off, he can easily be pictured in Cubbie Blue... again.

Getting Jim Edmonds will be the equivalent of the Bulls signing of John Starks a few years ago,,,it's a bunch of crap, and Hendry should be gone!!! The team is playing well, the group looks like they are having fun,,,don't bring that bum into the clubhouse.

Cubs fans are so stupid. I agree that signing Edmonds doesn't make any sense because he's bad, but Cubs fans are more concerned that he used to play with the Cardinals. Who cares? Did you boo Dennis Rodman when he played with the Bulls? How about Gary Gaetti when he helped the Cubs get into the playoffs?

Why do we need another left handed bat off the bench? Isn't Ward left handed and why would the Padres dump Edmonds with there team BA and Edmonds hitting .178 in 90ab. What are you afraid off Hendry? Look how well we are doing with Aramis not up to his full potential yet. You have a team playing together and a manager who knows talent and makes the right moves besides we have 3 centerfielder on the team now. Leave well enough alone. THIS IS THE YEAR!!!

well im definetly a lifetime cubs fan and cardinals hater, but bringing in edmunds might help us a litle more it surely cant hurt, its not like we have to have him but have continued possible upgrades on your team is the smartest thing to do, do we cub fans remember last year playoffs no one could hit the side of the barn, maybe edmunds could fill that role and hendry is bringing him in for post season reasons, because remember cub fans the pennant is not won in the regular season, and we seem to always have problems hitting and scoring runs in the post season, i like the move (even though i may not like edmunds personally) but this is about baseball and trying to put your team in the best position to win the pennant, not the division,

Not a bad deal all around. If you are a true Cubs fan you will realize that he can probably be more productive than Pie, and if he isn't we can give him his outright release as he will be signing for the league minimum. I too disliked him as a Card, but you have to give him credit, he has made some amazing catches over the years and has always been a Cub killer, especially at Wrigley. He will be feared by pitchers as a lefty PH as well. Give him a chance, and all of you wack job Cub fans that think otherwise can go live on the Southside and root for the Sox - have fun!!!

Sending Pie to Iowa is good for the Cubs. This is just a temp fill-in. What have you to lose at this juncture of the season? It's only May. The season has a long way to go. Putting Pie down in AAA will be beneficial for all.

I think it's a bit early to be making moves to win the pennant. We're only in May. I'm more concerned about pitching at the moment, not hitting. We've scored the most runs in baseball at this point in the season. Why bring in a guy who's in his late 30's and struggling? I'll take Pie's defense over anything Edmonds can bring on those old legs.

Feared by a pitcher with an average of .178 vs. L's. Don't really see that happening. He hasn't hit above .263 since 2004 or hit more than 30 hr or 100 rbi so where is this productivity. Don't give credit to someone who is doing their job ( making a catch) just because he dove and made it look special. How many times was an actual dive needed or was he just show-boating. And now he doesn't have the mobility to do that anymore. And getting cut by the worst team in the league doesn't say much about your status these days. And stop talking about his play-off stats while we are in MAY.
