Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Picking out a shirt for Sunday has to be about as difficult for Tiger Woods as it is for Jack Nicholson to decide whether to bring the sunglasses inside. But this morning, Tiger had an interesting decision: Is it OK to wear the traditional Sunday red even when it's not the final round?

Apparently it is. Tiger is decked out in his usual red Nike shirt this afternoon at the U.S. Open, despite the fact that it's only the third round and he'll be teeing it up two more times this tournament (early this evening in the fourth round and tomorrow morning when he'll conclude that round).

Tiger's outfits are scripted by Nike months in advance, so the reason for the red is probably more contractual than anything, but it's still strange to see Tiger decked out in his victory colors despite having to play over 25 more holes. (Not as strange as it is seeing Tiger 14 shots off the lead, though.)

Assuming Tiger wears the red tomorrow (and it'd be surprising if he didn't), it will be the second straight year he wore his Sunday red on a U.S. Open Monday. Last year, you may remember, Tiger broke out the same style shirt for his 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate (who also wore red, a move I thought was intentional by Mediate -- he denied it). Tomorrow, he'll be wearing it with a lot less on the line.

The way you said that, other than wearing red, is the way the Phil Worshippers have been at
Bethpage all day for their Lord Phil.
But as always you are the only who can be right on. :) Happy blogging master

Tiger does not have to worry about catching the no-names at the top of the leader board. They will come back to him. Mickelson, Weir, and Goosen are the ones that could win the tournament and he is not that far behind them. This Barnes guy will fold like Phil Hellmuth with a duece ten. Should be some drama between the contenders and the pretenders disappear.

#6 / Can agree somewhat. I don't think Tiger will win. I think Phil will start his normal errant shots and be lucky to finish in the top 5. I would like to see Barnes win it, a new name in the major win list.

Tiger had his chances but couldn't capitalize...I feel he needed to get to -1 by the end of round 3 and he didn't...so he must now grab 5 shots on the front 9 to make some noise to scare any pretenders...It could happen but it is improbable...
Duval would be a great story...Mickelson would be more probable.
I just can't make any predictions...this has been a very strange tourney and still feel there is gonna be more crazy things to happen before this thing is all over...

I think I agree with Myrtle and Paul. Say the two leaders shoot 75 to finish at -3 and -2. Then the question is will the next group (Duval and others) shoot par to "catch" Barnes? And can Tiger shoot 66? Crazy as it sounds, there's still a halfway believable scenario where Tiger can win.

I don't think Tiger will win, Never Say Never, he can finish in the top 10 but he doesn't seem to be focused
    like he normally is.

aww poor travis, maybe a phil fan that doesnt appreciate TRUE greatness, there are few stories worth headlining on the Tour so why not focus on the biggest star athlete in the entire universe. barnes needs to get rid of that frickin hat and collapse, mickelson or mahan will pull it out.

I didn't realize the outfits were scripted in advance by Nike.
Barnes has been on the bogey train for the last few holes...Glover just tied him up on the 1st hole of the 4th round. Curious to see if Phil is able to make a move - his putter has not been his friend in the 4th round.

There are three different reds that seem to be important here, and Tiger's shirt color is the least of them. Whatever color shirt he wears, if he is not in red figures in the open, then the network will be. His importance to the tour cannot be overestimated. The minute he is not in contention the ratings plummet like GM's stock. And no wonder given the group of also rans that populate the tour these days. To his credit Phil is still a draw and if he were in contention in a major it would keep a lot of eyeballs on the tube or the LCDs. But after that there are serious problems. P. Harrington is a very good golfer but he is about as exciting as a pound of wet leather. Mike Wier is a nice guy but he is a Canadian.
Sweet but dull! Sergio has personality but no game, sorry. VJ is just an out and out jerk. Maybe he could win on the women's tour, nevermind he doesn't believe in mixing the genders. Boo Weekley is kinda cool but almost never contends. Geoff Ogilvy is the most boring Australian I have ever seen, good golfer I guess. I thought Zack Johnson had some spunk and might help, but that never materialized and so far he's not even that great. Remember when
there was Jack, Arnie, Tom, Lee, Johnny, Gary, Ray, etc. I hope Tiger keeps winning for another decade or the tour is going to be relegated to the Golf Channel full time.

It all depends on what Barnes and Glover do. If they shoot 70 or 71 it will be very difficult for anyone to overtake them. I think 6 under wins. Tiger is now on the first page of the leaderboard. They will hear his roar tomorrow. Phil will make a charge, too. This is gonna be great to watch.

I bet the kitchen that not only will Tiger be on the first page of the leader board by the end but he really has a good chance to win. Both of the "rook's" at the top will succumb to the pressure and slowly but surely come back to Tiger!

So many of you see Barnes struggle and you assume it is Tiger causing them to choke. It is pressure to win, you try too hard, you try to direct the ball instead of hit it and you get in trouble. Several weeks back a tournament had no Phil and no Tiger and still the leaders stumbled. Tiger's choke factor is over rated. It is more about knowing how to win than choking, and the fact that Tiger does not make mistakes, rather than others choking. tiger is just there to take advantage of their mistakes. Phil, Tiger, Duval, Barnes, Mahan, Glover, and a few others could get hot and win it. Or we may have a playoff again on Tuesday.
