Devil Ball Golf - Golf

Yes, we're all full of Tiger-love around these parts -- the guy's kind of good, as you might have heard -- but in the interest of full disclosure, we've got to show you every side of Mr. Woods. Like, for instance, this video from Saturday at the Australian Masters, with Tiger having a wee bit of trouble holding onto his club. Pay close attention to what happens around the 18-second mark:

See that? The fans applauding Woods? That's why he gets away with tossing clubs. (To be fair, he threw the club onto the ground, and it bounced into the crowd ... if that makes a difference.) Look, I'm a huge Woods fan, but this club-tossing garbage has to stop. The cussing doesn't bother me at all; the guy is human, and everybody gets frustrated enough to let a word or two out now and then. But the club-tossing is beneath him.

The problem is, the way that everyone perceives Tiger allows this stuff to perpetuate. It's high time that we stop taking Tiger Woods as an all-or-nothing package. You can't just excuse his on-course actions like this "because he's competitive" or "because other golfers do it" or "because they used to do it like this in the old days." The guy's got enough control to stick a ball to within inches of a cup from 200 yards out -- you're telling me he doesn't have the control to keep a club in his hand after his backswing?

And on the other side of the equation -- these tantrums don't automatically mean he's less of a golfer and less of a sportsman than Nicklaus or Palmer. He's got one flaw in his makeup, and critics seize on that to dismiss his entire career. Ridiculous. Enough with the "bad role model" nonsense. Tiger's got this one mark against him, and it's something that he can -- and should -- correct, but it's not like this is some deep, dark stain on his legacy.

The possibility that he could have brained someone with his club is a side issue, but an important one -- it would've been worldwide news before Tiger even got to his ball. (Still, if anybody could get away with clocking somebody on the head with a golf club ... ) This isn't a PR battle that Tim Finchem and the golf powers-that-be need to be fighting, not when it's within Tiger's power to control. It's okay to think Tiger's the greatest of all time and think he needs to get his temper under control.

Is it fair that we spend this much time scrutinizing his golf game? Hey, "fair" went out the window when Tiger started accepting seven-figure checks. This is part of the agreement -- all that money comes with a price. Now, granted, throwing clubs is not the worst thing he could be doing; heck, he could be throwing matches. But Tiger Woods is an icon, and this is low-rent behavior. He's got to be above it.

There are not many things that I like about tennis as compared to golf, but one of them is the way that they penalize and fine players for smashing raquets, and verbal abuse, remember Serena at the Open. I think that it is time that the tour start regulating these tantrums, and well I know many of your readers do not care if their favorite pros do something that is dangerous, but I think that it is intolerable. Banging your club is one thing, but putting fans at risk by bad temper is inexcusable, much as waking up sleeping people in the stands by hitting golf balls at them is too.

Tarnish his legacy? Hah! never. No the media and all the Eldrick honks will make sure he's well protected. It's too bad that so many peoples lives are so shallow that they think he walks on water . I love the recreation that we call golf and I admire the pros for the hard work and skill, but enough is enough. I guess the way that a persons character is measured anymore is by how far he can hit a little white ball. Kind of sad for us if you think about it.

It's a simple case of you get what you tolerate. The tour tolerates the behavior and so it continues. Anyone who has played a round of golf knows how frustrating the game can be; so if the pros want to tear up their own equipment, fine by me. Chucking clubs into the gallery because you shanked it left off the tee, that's another story. Observing golf from the gallery is an at-risk sport - from golf balls - not flying clubs. Sadly, it will probably take the first severe head injury for any change in PGA regs to occur. And what does this say about the PGA's star player? Actions speak louder than words.

I wonder if Tigers most ardent fan would SUE him if they got hit and badly injured by a flying club due to a temper tantrum or just laugh it off?

Nothing to say really. I will simply let eldrick's character speak for itself. I am guessing however that there would not have been much laughter if one of the spectators had been injured by taking the clubhead to the cranium. Grow up eldrick.

To me, watching the video, he did not even apologize for his actions. a fine would not be enough (multi-millionaire) but suspension for a month or so. (oh!, that would affect the gate receipts at the tournaments, can't have that either)

It has not been said yet but if you were to read the rules of golf, PGA and European rules, it clearly states that if you are to throw a club out of anger you are to be charged a two stroke penalty! So if he did not stroke himself for the incident and signed his scorecard he should be disqualified for signing a inaccurate card.
But for some reason nobody is saying anything about that. Oh no, you can't stroke TIGER! He is our staple boy! The coming of a golf God so to speak. Fortunately I grew up playing this wonderful game but thanks to my Father, I wasn't able to play the game without learning all of the rules and how to properly act while on the golf course.
I am just as big of fan of Tiger as any and his skills amaze and humble me but his on course antics and obvious breaking of rules should not go unnoticed!
Hey Tim Finchum...PGA Tour president, I know that your boy has you in his back pocket but you are the only one who can speak up and say anything. We all know you won't since being in Wood's back pocket means your in his pocket book!

Someone please tell me at what time point in the video did he throw the club into the crowd. Unless he just let it go as the swing completed back, I can't tell when he actually threw it out into the crowd.
Anyway, if he hurts someone one day doing that, his P/R managers will be pulling all-nighters doing damage control. The man cannot forget who is paying his bills.

Watching the video again, it looks like he threw the club to the ground and it bounced into the crowd, unfortunate, but not a major penalty but golf rules.

The fans should have taken the club and snaped it. I am competative as they get but the farthest I go is to bang the club on the ground.
Maybe the crowd should snap a few pictures in his back swing to anger him a little more and see how much more anger they can get out of him.

Tiger should be held to the rules just like the rest of the player, I dont' think I ever saw Arnold P, Jack M, or Lee T. pull these childress pranks but was when real pro's payed the sport. Rules are Rules no matter the player.
