Roto Arcade - Fantasy

There are certainly parallels to draw between Steven Jackson and Frank Gore(notes). Both are fully featured running backs for NFC West squads that haven't enjoyed much success in their careers. And both will enter the 2009 season at the age of 26. But who should be selected first in fantasy drafts leading up to Week 1? Brandon Funston and Scott Pianowski have differing opinions, and state their case in 250 words or less.

Funston says...

In the past four years, here’s a look at where Steven Jackson finished among running backs in fantasy points per game, along with the Rams’ record for that season in parentheses:

2008: 3rd (2-14)
2007: 9th (3-13)
2006: 3rd (8-8)
2005: 11th (6-10)

It’s important to note that not once in those four years did Frank Gore average more fantasy points than Jackson. Also consider, as it’s very likely to happen once again in ’09: not once in that span did the Rams finish with a winning record. So, if you are going to argue against S-Jax, it can be for only one reason: durability.

In each of the past two seasons, Jackson has missed four games because of injuries. But it’s actually pretty amazing that that was all the time he missed considering his two ailments were a torn groin and a torn hamstring, injuries that have derailed others for much longer.

Rams GM Bill Devaney made the obvious statement this offseason that, " ... our best player on the team is Steven Jackson. First and foremost, we’re going to try to run the ball and try to establish ourselves as a strong running team." The Rams plan to employ a run-heavy version of Andy Reid’s West Coast offense, which means S-Jax will have a Westbrookian, all-purpose role, and Jackson’s receiving skills will get the kind of attention it hasn’t seen since ’06.

Face it, Gore’s no Ironman. In a choice between the two, I’ll go with the higher proven upside.

Pianowski says...

It’s never been a question of talent with Gore – he’s proven over his four-year career that he can dominate a football game in a variety of ways. But in 2009 the Niners finally have the full package of support in place for Gore, and with that in mind I’m calling for his best season.

Fantasy production from running backs is generally tied to winning clubs, something the Niners have a good shot at being this year. San Francisco had a sneaky 7-2 finish last year and now they get the seventh-easiest schedule on paper. Head coach Mike Singletary and OC Jimmy Raye have made it clear that Gore is going to be the focus of the offense; Mike Martz had trouble maximizing Gore’s talents. The team also catered to Gore’s one request in the offseason, re-signing fullback and blocking dynamo Moran Norris(notes). When Gore was tilting fantasy championships back in 2006, the unsung Norris was clearing the way.

Gore’s durability comes up often as a flag but while he’s missed three games in the last two years, Jackson has sat out eight times. Gore can’t match Jackson’s pure power but he’s capable of making inside yards and he’s got a better breakaway gear outside (4.7 YPC to 4.3 YPC). The Niners are probably a coin flip to be a winning club this year; does anyone want to make that bet on the Rams? We’re looking at two talented backs, but Gore’s environment is far safer. Double-down on No. 21.

I agree that it should be Gore's best year. Whether that means more fantasy points than S-Jax however.... who knows. I like Jackson's ceiling and Gore's floor.

The Rams have not gotten any better, while the Niners have. That alone is enough for me to pick Gore. Sure Jackson has more points per game, and that's great, but when he's missed 4 each of the past 2 years (and you can't exactly request which weeks those will be), the risk is too high.

Put me in Camp Gore, I suspect that he saves the environment and invents the internet this season. I agree that talent is often not as important as opportunity in football. S-Jax has been a top 3 talent wise RB in the NFL for years, but he doesn't have the O Line, the other offensive threats, or the durability to make use of those talents. Gore seems like a prime candidate to be this year's Michael Turner (i.e. the only back with 360+ carries). The 49ers will run, a lot, and when they throw, they might throw it to Gore as well. I have him in my top 5 RBs, personally. I see a lot more streakiness in drafted SJax.
frenzy, the value of romo/schaub and evans/breaston is a near toss up in my eyes (assuming boldin doesn't get traded), and bowe is much much better than randle el. if i had the schaub/bowe/evans side, i would stay put.

Jax is a chicken, Gore has Mettle. Jax will break down, Gore will play with Injury...Jax is a baby, Gore is a Man.
The Rams Suck, the 9ers are chasing the Cards for #1. Do the Math. Georgia died, the kids want to sell the team, they got a defensive coordinator as coach...The Rams continue going downhill until SOMEONE from L.A. buys them back and moves them BACK TO THE COLLISEUM, then they start winning again. NO Offense to STL, but since Warner left, the team has gone downhill.P.S. Holt is gone, Bruce is Gone, Bulger Sucks, Defense is Old..
Give me a break. THat team needs a whole rework done? QUestion: WHom is doing the blocking? I don't know these guys? Where's Orlando Pace, GONE....NUFF SAID: GORE.

I tend to draft on pure talent above team strength. I would love to have both guys on my team, but I'd take Jackson if I could only pick one. I'd probably take the full five minutes during the draft to mull over my decision. Tough call.

No way, Schaub can even Romo's production if he stays healthy this year. Bowe and Evans Breaston and Randel El. Randle El? That guy is useless in fantasy. Whoever's getting Romo is getting reamed.

I own Gore in a keeper league, im hoping he does explode and have a career year. So my vote is a bit biased, I owned S-Jax the past 2 years in other leagues, and all he's done is hurt my production with his nagging injuries. Its a coin flip on health, but im going with my man Gore

Gore is a beast. He always leans forward and maximizes every carry. He can bowl over safeties when in the open field. He can run inside and out. Top 5 back hands down!

It's tough, I like RB's on good teams with a good defense. Gore wins both those battles. San Fran's O-line isn't that great either and is very inexperienced. Gore will finish with more carries and probably more yards, Jackson seems like he will get a whole lot of dumpoff passes. If i'm in a ppr league and feel like i'm going to draft safe weekly consistency from winning teams the rest of the way, the pick is Jackson. Standard league you take Gore's surroundings, coach, and ability to then draft sporadic high upside talent throughout the draft. You feel more comfortable building from Gore.

This is actually a really good debate...Gore vs. S-Jax. They're really very very close on the scale. However, I have to side with putting Gore higher on my draft board because of the pieces around him. The Rams aren't going to scare anyone this year, and teams will be able to load up even more against the ground game. Jackson will get his numbers, but Gore will have the supporting cast around him so teams cant stack the box against him as much. If those around him can become a big enough threat to open up some running lanes for Gore, he should be the man this season. Gore by a nose.

I just think the upside of Steven Jackson is too sexy to pass up. I'm a sucker for high risk high reward players like Gaborik, Harden and Jackson.

The Rams added two offensive linemen and a blocking fullback, which means that IF Jackson can stay healthy, he should be able to thrive in '09. Even though injuries limited Jackson to 12 games in each of the last two seasons, he has still managed to amass over 1,000 yards.
I'll take Jackson over Gore any day of the week---especially Sundays.

Even though Funston already owned Pianow's biggest point about a winning team, Gore is the better back IMO, and he is as sure a thing as anyone in the first round with the 49ers new system.
