Roto Arcade - Fantasy

I decided to go with two servings of Closing Time today; your first helping of CT can be found here, or you can stick with this piece, Closing Time 2 – Electric Boogaloo. Everyone who reads both entries and passes a detailed comprehension test will be entered to win a Craig Falzone bobblehead. Enough with the preamble, onto the notes of the evening.

Does anyone want to offer a defense for David Ortiz(notes)? What's on the pro side of the argument? Does the line-drive rate of 21 percent soothe you? Will you cut him some slack because he bats third in a strong offense? Does he get any points for being huggable? Papi took an ugly 0-for-7 collar at Anaheim Thursday, striking out three times and stranding 11 men on base. He's yet to hit a homer or play the field this season – who wants to be stuck with a utility-lock up that doesn't offer any power?

I realize the walk/strikeout rate offers some reason for optimism, but in my mind that's in part because teams haven't accepted the reality yet – there's no reason to be afraid when pitching to Ortiz. I can't imagine it gets much worse for Ortiz, but I'll be surprised if it gets a lot better. I think his stardom days are gone for good, and I'm glad he's not torpedoing any of my teams at the moment. If you've got an Ortiz trading story from the front lines, I want to hear about it in the comments.

The Mets had to be steamed after blowing a couple of games against Atlanta this week, and they decided to run out their frustration at San Francisco Thursday night. Jerry Manuel's crew went for seven steals against poor Bengie Molina(notes) and Co., with David Wright(notes) getting four of the swipes.  Throw in a couple of bags on the other side (Emmanuel Burriss(notes), Fred Lewis(notes)) and it was a fun night on the basepaths.

The respective closers had the final say in the game's result. Brian Wilson(notes) got the "ninth inning in a tie game" assignment that's routinely given to home-team closers, but he couldn't command his electric stuff and the Mets rapped him around for three runs. Francisco Rodriguez(notes) appreciated the big cushion and needed just 10 pitches to take the Giants down in the bottom of the inning, stranding one runner. Say what you want about the price of free-agent closers, but K-Rod (10 saves, 1.02 ERA) sure looks like a reasonable buy to me (three years, $37 million).

Make it four mediocre turns in a row for Gil Meche(notes) (4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 1 K), which makes you wonder if he's still feeling any lingering effects from the sore back that popped up at the end of April. Mind you this Baltimore lineup is going to do a lot of damage to good and bad pitching, alike, as the season goes along. Snappy Orioles prospect Nolan Reimold(notes) made his major-league debut and went 1-for-5 out of the No. 7 slot. Ellis Bradley Evans would like you to know that Billy Butler(notes) was moved into the No. 3 spot and had another productive game (5-1-2-3, .283 for the year).

Three cheers for B.J. Upton(notes), who doesn't just play for the Tampa Bay Rays – he plays for you and me. A lot of players would shut down the running game if their club happens to trail by nine runs, but that didn't stop Upton from swiping a couple of bags in the middle of Thursday's loss to the Indians. The game was a lost cause because the Tribe basically took BP against James Shields(notes), Joe Nelson(notes) and Grant Balfour(notes); Asdrubal Cabrera(notes), Victor Martinez(notes) and Shin-Soo Choo(notes) combined for 10 runs, 12 hits and nine RBIs.  Matt LaPorta got in on the fun as well, posting a 5-2-2-0 line and stealing a base.

We had a good discussion of Ricky Nolasco(notes) in the comments last night and RotoWire's Dalton Del Don has some interesting thoughts on the Nolasco topic as well; must-reading for anyone trying to figure out the enigmatic right-hander.

NHL Game 7s are better than NBA Game 7s for one simple reason – the road team has a fighting shot. I know this is a baseball blog, but I had to get that off my chest. Next question.

Not an Injury Blog: Carl Crawford(notes) (shoulder) isn't seriously hurt and might have pinch hit in Thursday's game had the contest been close. There's a good chance we'll see him on Friday. … Edgar Renteria(notes) tweaked his right hamstring beating out an infield single and was forced out of the game. We'll see what the Giants say Friday. … B.J. Ryan(notes) (shoulder) came off the DL as expected, but the Jays have already made it clear that he's no going to supplant Scott Downs(notes) . . . Delmon Young(notes) will be away from the Twins this weekend so he can tend to his ill mother. … Hideki Matsui(notes) (hamstring) got back in the lineup and went 1-for-3 at Toronto; his solo homer decided the game. … Pat Burrell(notes) (neck) will miss a couple of games after he gets a cortisone shot in his neck Friday. Willy Aybar(notes) went 1-for-4 as the DH Thursday. … Jose Reyes has a sore calf and is listed as day-to-day, like the rest of us. He didn't play Thursday.

Sorry to delay the outfield prices, a few things have pushed those back to Friday (first off the jetway).
If you want to talk Thursday baseball, we can do that here. Make sure you read both pieces, for best results.

Nothin like havin 5 starters go with mediocre results. Scott Baker is Killin me, thats 2 out of 3 outings that gardenhire left him in an inning too long. i believe he'll have a good season because of the progress but the last inning meltdown is killin me.
Papi is going to be one of the biggest busts this year. I went agnostic and took him when he fell in one league but I've had him benched for a long time now. The problem is it's hard to know what to do with him. I can't drop him yet because there's still a chance, I'd love to see Carlos Delgado's stats from May 15, 2008.

    No news on Jose Reyes?
The Royals have been overachieving this season. Even if Big Donkey stays in the 3-hole I don't think he's worth an add in most formats, and he's unowned in every single one of my leagues.
Joe Maddon should be fired on the spot if he doesn't have Zobrist in the lineup every day that Burrell is out. And then kick him in the shins on his way out for those ugly glasses.

Tonights performances by Papi and Aviles sealed the deal for me...I will be parting ways with them this week in my no bench money league. I'm actually looking forward to it too. Crede is looking very ownable in replacement of that corner infield slot

I am getting a little impatient with Sizemore, myself. Shoo, Martinez and Cabrera are killing the ball against the same pitchers. This slump has lasted a good 3 weeks.

Delgado was horrendous through April last year (.198, though he did have three homers). This is what he did the rest of the year (133 games): .285/.363/.556, 82 runs, 35 homers, 103 RBIs.
If you want to cut-and-paste specific game sections, baseball reference has some neat tools on the individual player pages.

You don't think Billy Butler is ownable in most formats? What about an AL Central only league?
Amyway, dude's a badass. He may not hit 30 HRs, but he can bat 300+. And drive in a lot of runs when he's not scoring himself.

Papi is in a slump. Sorry but I don't buy into the decline story. He had great hand eye coordination and bat speed 2003 through 2007 and even with the injury 2008 wasn't a complete bust. Yeah hes terrible right now but hes not done. This slump is a mental thing not a physical one. Stashing him is really the only option as you can't get anything for him in trade value and dropping him gets you zero. And I think as soon as he has a good night people will be quick to grab him off the waiver wire (in whatever ridiculous leagues those are where he is a free agent... meaning in most semi competitive leagues everybody and his cousin (yeah to quote Many Acta) is stashed on a bench somewhere.) Papi will come around and if he goes at 3/4 of his 2007 speed when he does for 4 months he'll be a very solid playah. (He still bats 3rd for the Sox so why give up on him when they haven't?) No today just wasn't our day. It started with the bases loaded nubber Papi hit in the top of the 12th. Then the C's. Finally that gutwrenching Bs game. You see Giselle had a headache tonight. Not even Brady is scoring. No joy in Mudville. A bad day for Beantown. (But then again how many cities have 3 teams going all at once?)
Its a great Yahoo story and I'm sure its getting to the Big Man that he has been slumping. Dustin had a helluva a slump 2 years back and he turned it on to finish as ROY. How bad is your memory? Papi among all the sluggers in this era has shown he has the talent. He will snap back. Count on it. But feel free to bench him til he does.)
    Its a streaky game.

Hey Pianow, Yahoo's pop-out news piece on Ryan Franklin says he earned his 10th save, his 1st since his BS the other day.
He did work a clean inning, but he didn't get a save. 4 run lead at the time. Somebody may wanna fix that.

-, That year Pedroia hit .182 in April then .333 the rest of the way . . . but he was not in a decline. If you choose to use the word "decline" specifically, then, yes, he's in a decline because his numbers have dropped off considerably and he'll be hard-pressed to replicate those numbers prior to the 2008 season. I was still an Ortiz advocate in April - .264 career in April, 40 points higher in the months of May through July (.304) - but I'm losing faith, too. As a fantasy option, unless he's driving in a lot of runs, covering even 23/.285 isn't that hard to do.
I was hoping Anaheim would advance. Detroit and Chicago are pretty much polar opposites so that should be an intriguing match-up to watch. Rockets played great team ball tonight . . . I'm still giving them a fighting shot in Game 7 (though I wouldn't bet on it).

The Magic are a better team with a better coach. I just can't get a grip on what the problem is. They'll certainly do better if Dwight learns some more post moves and can shoot from further than 3 ft though.

Here's my comment. I have had David Ortiz in the starting lineup every game so far and I drafted him in about the 5th round. To ad injury to insult, I also started Chien Ming Wang for all of his three disastrous starts. I think his stats are worse than Ortiz's stats. Can you guess what place I am in out of twelve people?

It shames me to see everyone jumping on the Ortiz bandwagon. I just sealed an incredible deal in my league (Fukudome + Lilly for Carpenter and Ortiz) and I'm thrilled. I'm going to let Papi sit on the bench until I see some more RBI from him and at least a .260 avg for a week.....
Look at Papi's numbers in 2003 for the first two months. They weren't pretty at all. He might be doing worse than that year right now, but you can't give up on this guy until you see a whole year of this. I know it hurts to have a 4th rounder on your team who isn't doing anything, but baseball is a marathon. Everyone talking about dropping Papi is sprinting and when the month is over and Papi finds his swing, you will all be out of breath! Calm down everyone and just bench Papi. Fill him in with some free agent that will help you in the categories you need. Everyone....and I mean EVERYONE who drops Papi will be sorry, mark my words.
As you all know.............as soon as you drop/bench a guy who is slumping, he goes off and makes you regret it.

We had Papi go for ARod straight up at the beginning of a the season in our league- it was a total Homer/ARod hating move, as our league's in Boston, but, dang, that trade's gonna smart by the end of the season. Poor Big Papi. At some point, if you're one to shove your head in the sand on the whole PED issue, this one's gonna cause some problems reasoning away.

BJ Upton has no baseball IQ at all! What a selfish jig stealing bases when you're team is down 9 runs. He's lucky he didn't his hitter plunked! If I was the catcher, I wouldn't even make an attempt, so the play would go down as a fielder's indifference rather than a SB. Then his next time up, I would put in my hardest thrower and head-hunt...if you can't hit his head, hit his knee.
You don't disrespect the game trying to pad personal stats!
    BJ Upton = Bush Leaguer
