It took more than five full games and one quarter, but a San Francisco 49ers quarterback finally threw a Super Bowl interception.

Joe Montana never threw one. Neither did Steve Young. But Colin Kaepernick made the wrong kind of history in the second quarter against the Baltimore Ravens, overthrowing a ball over the middle to Baltimore safety Ed Reed.

The interception was historic for Reed, the great Ravens safety playing in his first Super Bowl. It was his ninth career playoff interception, which ties the all-time record.

The 49ers made uncharacteristic mistakes the entire first half, with two early turnovers that put them in a 14-3 hole. Kaepernick's interception sailed very high, perhaps a mistake from a young quarterback playing on such a big stage. On San Francisco's next drive, Kaepernick almost threw another interception to Ravens cornerback Cary Williams.
