Shutdown Corner - NFL

If a team's looking for a young, legitimate number one receiver, they certainly have options right now. The Browns are looking to trade Braylon Edwards, and now the Cardinals are open to offers for Anquan Boldin. Both are relatively young, both are very good, and maybe most importantly for a wide receiver, neither appears to be clinically insane.

So where might they end up? Let's look at the contenders:

Philadelphia Eagles. Naturally. Anytime a receiver's available -- and I mean absolutely any receiver -- the Eagles are always the first team anyone mentions. This makes sense, because the Eagles don't have very good wide receivers, and they haven't for some time.

But here's why I'd bet against Philadelphia: Because it never, ever happens. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, and the Eagles past behavior indicates that they just don't care about adding a big-time wideout. They don't think it's worth the price they'd have to pay. History says the Eagles might pretend to be interested, but they won't be pulling the trigger.

New York Giants. They were in the Braylon Edwards business, and that deal isn't quite done yet. I'm sure they'll give Arizona a call, kick the tires on Anquan, and compare prices. Clearly, they're after a new number one receiver after the departure and possible incarceration of Plaxico Burress. Both guys would fit the bill perfectly.

Baltimore Ravens. Joe Flacco needs targets, and Derrick Mason isn't going to last forever (I don't think). They can try to snag one in the draft, but this year's class is not thought of as one that's particularly good for receivers, and the Ravens don't pick until pretty late in the first round. Whatever receiver they get there isn't likely to be tremendously productive in his rookie year.

Tennessee Titans. They need the help at receiver, and there have been indications that they know it and are willing to go get it.

Too much money will be tied up in signing Suggs for the Ravens to make this work.

While I would LOVE to see the Titans get a receiver like Boldin - I would be surprised it they made a serious attempt! They are a run first offense and use the passing game in a limited fashion (Kerry Collins averaged 25 attempts/game last year while the rushing side of the offense racked up some 2400 yards!!!). I believe that signing Tory Holt and using him as a "mentor" for the receivers they have (and any they might pick up in the draft) is a more likely scenario.

Don't forget Miami. Anquan Boldin is a big time Parcells type of guy. It wouldn't surprise me if Parcells at least tries to get him.

Boldin is a fantastic #2 WR, but he isn't a sure thing to be a great #1. His stats are padded by having Fitzgerald on the same team.

Sure hope the Eagles go after one of them. If not they should draft Heyward-Bey.

William, I respectfully disagree. I think Boldin will be a great #1. He had a great year before Fitzgerald arrived and to get as many catches and yards as he got while sharing the ball with Fitzgerald since, is a good indicator that his numbers won't decline. Sure defenses shifted their focus to Fitz... but boldin still poses a huge threat alone.

with just over a week till the draft i see no one doing anything until draft day. the eagles have 2 1st round picks and 5 fifth round picks plus the other rounds, they in postion to pull off a trade if they want for tackle and wide receiver, but you never know

The Titans need to sign Anquan Boldin and give up their 2009 1st and 3rd round draft picks. The Titans desire is to win the Super Bowl. That has not happened. The Titans have not had a true #1 receiver since making the move to Nashville, TN. The list of Yancey Thigpen, Derrick Mason, and Drew Bennett did not fit the bill as #1 receivers. This year, like last year, Justin Gage comes into camp, listed as the Titans #1 receiver. Again, the same path, hopefully for the Titans, not the same result of not winning the Super Bowl.
The Titans made it to the Super Bowl in 2000 against the Rams, but that is 9 years ago, and will mark the 10 anniversay this January. That is a decade of the same philosphy without a true #1 receiver.
The time is now for the Titans to go after an experience, yet still young, Anquan Boldin. Nate Washington is a Derrick Mason. Justin Gage is a Drew Bennett. It’s time let go of failed wide receiver experiments in Yancey Thigpen, Carl Pickens, and David Givens. Thigpen and Givens experienced injuries. Pickens retired after his stinit with the Titans, proving he had already reached his peak with the Bengals. Boldin is still in his late 20s. He is ready to be “the guy” and out of Larry Fitzgerald’s shadow. If the Titans sit back, the New York Giants will gladly step up to fill Plaxico Burress’ shoes with Boldin and go after another Super Bowl. If that’s what the Titans are playing for, then make the move and go after a defensive end in the 2nd round to prepare to rotate with Jevon Kearse and Kyle Vandenbosch.

Bet he goes for the money and not a team whos close to a SB run !
So that leaves Cowboys,Eagles,Ravens, bc they have the money but no chance at the playoffs much less a SB run.

Boldin to the Cowboys is what I am hearing. I think the Giants will try to trade with Seattle for the 4th pick and then draft Crabtree, which is what I would do. Edwards would be nice.

it sounds like the eagles are going to go after a big LT in the draft by moving up, but i would love to see them get one the wide receivers too, with jackson and the other cast of alrights a boldin would make this a more dangerous team for sure

Interesting position the EAGLES are in. They can trade for either Edwards or Boldin and either would upgrade their offense, or they can hope to hit another home run via the trade like they did last year with Jackson. I think they will go the trade route and get Edwards. The Cardinals will want too much for Boldin and they would want him in the AFC if they traded him.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days.

B.A how can you say the Eagles, Ravens, and Cowboys have no chance at the playoffs, the Eagles and Ravens both made their leagues championship last year, and despite all the drama the Cowboys have one of the most talented teams in the league. Adding Boldin or Edwards to any of those 3 teams would make them definite playoff teams(if they weren't already) and possibly super bowl contenders. The Eagles and Ravens both have dominate defenses and the Cowboys when they play like they should could be just as dominate. So to make a comment like that just shows you have no idea what you are talking about.

they only got jackson, curtis, baskett, avant, brown, amendola(unknow player from the eagles practice squad)
edwards or boldin would be a good choice for the eagles just give up on of there first round picks and a pick in the draft for next year
