And that voice belongs to Tony Dungy, former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and current NBC analyst.
Luck has been assumed to be the top overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft since shortly after his birth in 1989. He's been called a can't-miss prospect, the best quarterback prospect to come along in a decade, and a franchise savior.
But now, we have the first signs that someone else might challenge Luck's pre-ordained status as the top overall pick in the draft. Dungy told Dan Patrick that he prefers Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III to Luck, mainly because of his mobility.
"The way the game is and the guys that bring that extra dimension — I love Aaron Rodgers now and I'd take (him) over Brady and Brees for the pressure he puts on the defense with his running ability. I just see these guys like Griffin and Russell Wilson and they're intriguing to me. I like Robert Griffin."
I like him, too, but I'd still go with Luck. For me, the big difference is the system they play in. At Stanford, Luck has played in an offense very similar to an NFL offense, taking snaps from under center and dropping back conventionally. Griffin's offense at Baylor is a spread offense, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it does make it harder to evaluate a guy. You just don't know if he'll be the same in a pro-style set.
Of course, things change, too. Some coaches are more willing than others to change their offense to fit their quarterback. See John Fox in Denver. Maybe the Colts, with a new GM, will make an even bigger change than anyone had anticipated.
