Chasing his mixed martial arts dream, Walker has signed with the Strikeforce promotion, according to Ariel Helwani of FanHouse. Strikeforce doesn't have the same caliber of fighters as the UFC, but it still has plenty of guys who can make Herschel Walker cry. According to the Strikeforce people, though, this is not a stunt, and is completely legit.
Naturally. No one in the fight business would ever do anything that wasn't completely on the up-and-up.
"This isn't a publicity stunt or a gimmick," [Strikeforce director of communications Mike] Afromowitz said. "Herschel Walker has tremendous athleticism, and he has always shown that off the gridiron. He's accomplished a lot in his life and in the world of sports. His accomplishments speak for themselves, and we hope that his athleticism can transition into a successful MMA career."
I hope so, too! But it won't! Any real fighter will batter him unrecognizable!
I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, and, to be fair, Walker was always recognized as a freakish athlete, capable of nearly anything, and was always in ridiculously good shape.
I'm not questioning Herschel's toughness, either, but there are a lot of tough dudes who aren't great fighters. Toughness is relative. Herschel Walker, I'm quite certain, would beat the hell out of me. He'd probably beat the hell out of Eric Dickerson or Freeman McNeil, too.
But at the age of 47, he's going to step into the world of MMA and compete seriously in the heavyweight division? Sorry, Hersch. I find that difficult to believe and frightening to think about. Please, MMA fighters who might step into the ring with Herschel Walker ... only hit one of him.
