The MJD plan for the Pro Bowl

The only thing more boring than the Pro Bowl is talking about how the Pro Bowl is boring. It's like complaining that MTV doesn't play music anymore, or that they don't call traveling in the NBA. Certain things just are the way they are, and if you're still complaining about them, you care more about complaining than you do about traveling or music.

I've got a plan for the Pro Bowl, though. Not necessarily to fix it, but to destroy it, and build something special in its place. You know what I'd do?

I'll tell you what I'd do. Flag. Football. Tournament.

Stick with me here, because I think this could work. To start with, forget about the idea of a traditional football game on Sunday afternoon. That concept is dead. Scratch it.

Each NFL team sends five guys to Hawaii, with maybe one alternate. Everyone would send a quarterback, and then a handful of skill position players. Whether those are wide receivers, running backs, defensive backs, whatever, that's up to the team. They can put together their own flag football squads.

Now, there are certain things we're going to have to sacrifice.

The first thing to go is the fan voting. Sorry. Personally, I wouldn't miss it, because the general public does things like vote Brett Favre into the Pro Bowl, and come on, that's just crazy.

Secondly, my Flag Football Tournament plan sort of leaves offensive and defensive linemen out in the cold. That's just a sacrifice we're going to have to make. We can still have an All-Pro team, or whatever you'd want to call it, and we can reward those guys with trips to Hawaii, or $10,000 bonuses, or whatever. But they're probably not going to play in the game.

And really, would you miss it? A successful Pro Bowl for a lineman is a Pro Bowl where he doesn't get injured. Since there's no blitzing allowed anyway, the lines are pretty much ornamental in a Pro Bowl game. We send them to Hawaii, but we keep them off the field. Sorry, big fellas, but that's the way it goes.

Back to the tournament. We take 32 teams, and seed them 1-32 in order of their regular season finish. Split it into 4 different "regionals," with the Steelers, Cardinals, Giants and Titans as the #1 seeds, and we get a bracket that looks something like this:

And there we go. Everyone plays both ways. It's Tony Romo, Terrell Owens, Jason Witten and Terrence Newman against Jason Campbell, Clinton Portis, Fred Smoot, and Santana Moss. It's Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White, and Jerious Norwood against Aaron Rodgers, Donald Driver, Ryan Grant, and Charles Woodson.

The Pro Bowl's all about displaying talent and putting on a show, right? Come on, you wouldn't want to see Steve Smith covering Braylon Edwards and vice versa? Adrian Peterson spinning and juking in the open field, keeping his flags away from defenders? Torry Holt one-on-one against Larry Fitzgerald? Ben Roethlisberger applying the pass rush against Daunte Culpepper?

Being flag football and all, we'd have to sacrifice the hitting that generally comes with football, but that's okay, because we don't see any hitting in the Pro Bowl anyway. In the entire history of the game, we've had, what, exactly one big hit? We're not missing much.

On a big open field, with that kind of talent, we could see some spectacular throws, catches, and runs. Make man coverage mandatory, so no team sits back in a zone and forces the offense to dink and dunk. This is backyard-style. And everybody's mic'd up at all times. I want to hear the trash talk, the jokes, whatever.

We play the first round on Friday, with 16 games running on ESPN and ESPN2, all day long. On Saturday, we play two more rounds, and we narrow the field down to four teams. Sunday on NBC, we play the semifinals and finals back-to-back, with all the eliminated teams in the stands watching, and the winning team splits a million dollars.

That's my plan, and I think it would be fun. Certainly a lot more fun than we have now, which is basically a three-hour light contact drill with men in Hawaiian shirts repeating again and again, "No, we swear, these guys really do care who wins."

Let's hear your plans for restructuring the Pro Bowl in the comments.

I hate to mention this, but they tried something like this several years ago. It was a Rookies / Sophomore game. Robert Edwards of NE blew out his knee and it was scrapped. It sounds fun and would make a great side game in Madden '10, but I think that is as far as the teams would allow it to go.

That Robert Edwards flag football game was played on the beach (i.e. in the sand), I believe.

Who says you can't have linemen in the game? Don't tell me Large Benjamin checking down to Casey Hampton in the flat wouldn't be good for some laughs.

I have no comment - this is pure genius. If Bill Simmons can push HORSE through the NBA All Star Weekend (I can't believe he hasn't official taken credit for that yet), I say MJD can turn the Pro Bowl into a Flag Tourney.

Sorry Jamie. First round is Eagles/Broncos. Redskins got Cowboys round 1.
Only change I would make to the proposed would be to not have NFC East, for example, play against another NFC East team in round one. This might ensure that Pittsburgh does not have as easy a schedule in this schematic as they always do in the regular season. As depicted above, the Steelers wouldn't have to play anybody until round four.

Yeah, because you're totally more likely to have a career ending injury in flag football than full contact football...
And I could totally see the Lions beating the Steelers in this format, the Steelers win 80% of their games based on defense and questionable entry into the end zone

    Heres my plan:
Each player selected gets to pick 2 ppl to go to Pro-Bowl with him and serve as his "players" The player can pick whoever, celebrities, guys from there colleges, just fans who want to play in a real game. If its a celebrity, they are asked to make a donation. Now the game itself is kind of a wash. Basically ppl pay 50 bucks to come in and they can watch the game but basically it gives them the chance to meet the Pro-Bowlers who will just be wandering around the stadium. Fans will get to go on the field (this game will be played week before superbowl so this is a chance to be on the field where the Superbowl will happen). Basically its just a huge fan love fest, we wait to give out the regular season awards during timeouts and stoppages. Potentially, youll have a regular joe get a chance to jack up Asthon Kutner as he goes across the middle.
The players get to meet at a teams training facility where they get a chance to go over rudiments of game and be given a permission, theyll meet a week before with retired coaches getting them ready for the game.

OK - and each team has to do a really, really whacked-out, fully choreographed and completely excessive post-touchdown celebration when they score. If it's good, they get the extra point. Bad and it's a miss.

OR we could have the players play in their speedos, thus giving us a chance to get out of the house without our wifes for once.

Hell, maybe this way, Vince Young could actually help the Titans win something. Crappy NFL QB, but imagine him on a flag football field, running around with Chris Johnson, Cortland Finnegan, Michael Griffin and VandenBosch (I'm not taking a WR). It'd be like the Rose Bowl all over again!!!

I like the idea, but where's the award for good play for the players. I know personally we could careless about the probowl, but these guys are getting a free trip to hawaii and hanging out with each other and having some fun! I believe if you let every team go noone is getting any awards. Try this! Keep your idea with the flag football of skill positions, but then take your O and D lineman and have them have a Best Ball Golf Match where NFC vs AFC. The NFC O line vs the AFC O line and the same way with the Defense. I would love to see a guy like Shaun Rogers hacking away at a golf ball!

Awesome idea...who in the NFL do you need to get this to in an effort to make it happen. Seriously, this is good stuff and I guarantee it would get better ratiings than what they get now with the Pro Bowl. Plus, everyone gets to see their favorite teams field a squad and have some fun. It would at least give Raiders fans and Lions fans something to watch after the Super Bowl. THIS IS GENIOUS...PURE GENIOUS! Make it happen MJD, make it happen!!!

I could see over time this event taking on some of the aura of the NCAA BB championship tournament. But then again, I get a little desperate this time of the year.

if you put it to a vote amongst the fans I say hell yeah, this would be an honest yet good wholesome way to make a meaningless all-star weekend into a crap shoot off backyard style flag football.
move it to 7 on 7 I agree with Macky
2 Thumbs up I would watch that.
