Roy Williams has problems with numbers

Apparently, it doesn't take Terrell Owens(notes) to cause a receiver controversy in Dallas -- all you need is a trade in which Jerry Jones got fleeced by the Detroit Lions, one maddeningly underachieving diva, and an undrafted free agent that came out of nowhere to put up two of the finest performances at his position in recent memory.

The diva in question is Roy Williams, the ex-Lions receiver who hasn't come close to fulfilling the price Dallas paid for him -- first-, third-, and sixth-round picks in 2009, plus a seventh back in 2010. Through Week 8 of the 2009 season, Williams has 14 catches for 249 yards and two touchdowns. He's fourth in receiver productivity on the team, behind Jason Witten(notes), Patrick Crayton(notes), and some guy by the name of Miles Austin(notes), who has put up individual-game performances of 250 and 171 receiving yards in the last month. Austin is getting his first starts this season, and he's making the most of it. The same cannot be said of Williams, whose resemblance to Owens is only in sheer disgruntlement.

"I'm the No. 1 receiver," Williams recently told the Dallas media. "But things are just going No. 2's way." No. 2 is obviously Austin, and Williams wasn't done shifting blame away from himself.

"(Austin) gets the ball thrown correctly his way. I'm stretching and falling and doing everything. Everybody who's been here's balls are there. Our footballs are everywhere right now."

What Williams is trying to say, in a convoluted fashion, is that Tony Romo(notes) is throwing footballs with extreme efficiency to everyone else on the team, and hurling Ryan Leaf goatballs to him. That, and not Williams' sloppy routes and alligator arms, is the reason Dallas' "star receiver" has caught 14 of the 37 balls thrown his way, for a pathetic catch rate of 38 percent (as opposed to Crayton's 51 percent and Austin's 62 percent).

Now, it's come out that Michael Irvin offered tips to Williams and Austin during the Cowboys' training camp about anticipating the snap count and using correct catch technique. Irvin recently said that while Austin was a willing and grateful pupil, Williams wasn't interested. Say what you will about Irvin, but there haven't been many receivers in NFL history with his absolutely demonic competitive spirit once he got on the field. Austin understands that every little bit helps. Williams clearly doesn't.

The Cowboys have a major problem on their hands with Williams. His high price forces the team to put him in a lead role he hasn't earned and doesn't deserve, and it may take more bad plays and blamescaping before this sad experiment comes to an end.

Well written article - it seems like you were sitting around the same coffee table my buddies and I were last weekend! When a QB, known for accuracy, is accurate to EVERYONE except 1 receiver - it is generally that receivers fault. Jason Witten has had several passes behind him this year and he came out and admitted he has been "narrowing off" the routes too much (turning or slanting into the middle too quickly). There is the difference between a great team player and a CRYBABY!

Herm Edwards on ESPN First Take hit the nail on the head. Roy Williams is the 4th receiver with the Cowboys. Jason Witten is 1st, Miles Austin is 2nd, and Patrick Crayton is 3rd.

Just because Jerry Jones traded for you and wanted you to become the number, go to receiver, doesn't make it so Roy! You actualy have to EARN it. So far you haven't. Right now the Cowboy fans think of you as a bust! You have half a season to prove your worth. Shut your mouth and play! Next stop Buffalo.

you would think that considering that Roy is a playin close to home (he went to the school from Friday Night Lights), that he would want to put on a show for all those Texans. too bad he stopped caring once he got paid

This reminds me of the Ahmad Bradshaw over Brandon Jacobs hype from a couple weeks ago. This is a non-story in Dallas. The Cowboys are winning and Williams is contributing, albeit as a number two. Don't go and tell me that Patrick Crayton should be in there right now, you're insane. It's obvious that Austin is the go-to reciever but Williams is a solid number two who has tried to maintain a low profile in the media, despite the constant badgering he gets. Maybe Williams would be less hesistant if Romo would stop laying hospital passes out there for him, high and over the middle.

I agree with Roy Williams 93%...Have you observed the inaccuracy with which Tony Romo throws the football in general, but especially to Williams? The ball is usually 2 to 6 feet BEHIND the reciever...if not behind him then it way to hight...that weir side arm delivery looks very sissy-like and hap-hazzard...I love this quarterback as a person. He is a very nice man; a wonderful person...However, his accuracy a professional quarterback is off the mark...the reciever that do catch the ball do so after the most incredible efforts...Study the accuracy of thepasses to Williams and that of those thrown to others; its way different. that is not all attributable to poor route running by Williams...just my opin; life long Cowboys fan...jk

I can say that I have seen some goatballs, but not that many. This all comes down to running proper routes and executing on time playes, and Roy just hasnt done that, he lazy and sluggish off the line and seems to forget where he is on the field. Austin is running crisp routes, he runs like lightning and is slippery in the secondary.
Some of the early game issues were on Romo, but he has been excellent throught the last three games.

It would help if Roy Williams would not drop so many balls thrown to him. He is the #1 wr on Dallas is that respect! I remember one that was right in the middle of his arms/chest this past Sunday. Should have been a simple catch, but..Drop!
The QB that wants to win will throw the ball to a wr that catches the ball.
He should close his mouth and help his team, not attack it with he whining "throw ME the ball...I am #1, I am #1." Play like a #1 wr and you will be.

It does look like he has some alligator arms. Maybe he should take off those sleeves so he can get some feelings/bloodflow in his hands.

I can't believe he has the nerve to run his mouth no wthat we're playing well. We need a bog showing in Philly this weekend, and this is not what the Cowboys need. #1 reveivers need to catch the ball MOST of the time, not drop it MOST of the time, and I see some pretty amazing catches each week. As a #1 MAKE A PLAY!!

Just goes to show that being a rich guy who played college ball 40+ years ago doesn't mean you can become a GM. Jones should hire a GM then just sit in his owner's box and shut up. Roy Williams is all hype (mostly self generated) and no results. Jones wasted at least two (if not three) of those draft picks and all that money on another me-first loudmouth. Romo's just a mediocre QB, at best, but if he's hitting his other receivers then it's not all his fault.

Sometimes it looks like Romo is off because Williams is running the wrong route or his timing is off. Romo is doing fine - his timing is on with the other receivers.
Time to sit Williams. Don't let him become a headache. Cowboy's would be better without him on the field right now.

Roy is an idiot, but there may be something to his claim. If a receiver is dropping balls (like Roy is), and he's still in the starting lineup, the QB may start feeling the need to be 'extra precise' with his throws to that receiver...which unfortunately can cause the exact opposite effect. The QB needs to be able to just throw the ball--muscle memory--without having to think about it. If Romo is thinking "this pass better be PERFECT or else Roy will drop it", the chances are better that the pass will be off the mark.
So Roy's crappy routes and bad hands may indeed be causing more errant passes coming his way--a double-whammy.
The solution is the same: start catching balls.

Even Sam Hurd runs better routes. Absolute perfect route and perfect pass , result = TD.
Even on a easy slant, Roy just about losses the ball, 2 more inches short and it woulda been a fumble.
Play the game like we know you can Roy, you are better than what you have shown.

Hey Doug Farrar, why not actually write the full story rather than spinning a non story to get a headline for yourself....the sad part is you've actually convinced half of these people that he was actually acting like a diva and complaining rather than simply answering a question he has been constantly asked by the media. What you managed to conveniently leave out was the part where williams said he's pleased that the cowboys are winning he's simply frustrated that he hasn't been more effective (notice how unlike TO he's taking just as much of the blame)...he also went on to say that he's not asking for more passes to be thrown his way he just wants to be put in better positions to make plays.
I get that the popular thing is to hate on Roy right now and it's likely well deserved....but show a bit more class and actually report the entire story and not just what makes for a juicy headline that might get your name out there while ruining a mans reputation

Just think about this for one moment. What if TO and Austin were #1 & #2. Who could defend them? What the CB missed. I've always defended Jerry Jones, but he made a big big mistake on Roy Williams and it hurts for me to say this because I'm a UT Grad. Oh well, it all comes down to winning or losing, and if they can win against the Eagles, who cares what Roy thinks.
