Recently-suspended Giants WR Plaxico Burress has been fined a stunning 40-50 times during his four seasons in New York, according to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer. The fines have been levied for various offenses, mainly related to Burress' tardiness for meetings and treatments. Considering that Burress has played in 50 games for the Giants, the total number of violations is mind-boggling. (It should be said that Tom Coughlin is a task-master who fines players for being early to meetings (his meetings begin five minutes early), so getting a few fines probably isn't out of the ordinary for some players. But 50? That's habitual.)

Glazer's sources also tell him that Burress is often insubordinate towards Coughlin, frequently "tuning him out" during conversations and ignoring direct orders. This news isn't altogether surprising; Plaxico has long been known for his diva-like attitude, something that gets glossed over because of the successes his teams have had.

Burress has accepted the fines without incident, writes Glazer, but was taken aback by the suspension because "he just wants to play football." What Plax doesn't seem to understand is that playing football is a full-time job that includes going to meetings, getting treatment for injuries and listening to coaches. His new $35 million contract doesn't just pay him for Sundays, but for the other six days of the week as well.

This is a major problem for the Giants. It's one thing to give star treatment to your biggest offensive weapon, but allowing him to create his own rules in a locker room that won a Super Bowl thanks, in part, to the disciplined approach of Tom Coughlin is a powder keg of resentment waiting to explode. It seems like the Giants tried to handle this in-house for the past few years, but when Burress didn't show up for a meeting on Monday, they were forced to act.

Now that the team has drawn its line in the sand, what happens the next time Burress shows up late or turns his back to Coughlin? The toughest kind of person to control is the one who doesn't care.

Anyone who has known about this guy since his college days knows he is a head case. None of this is new. He is typical of the star athlete who was given free passes on his behavior his whole life. His sense of entitlement warps his entire view of the world. Outside of his ability to catch a ball, he has no value to his team or the rest of humanity. Leaving him a very expendable asset once his skills begin to diminish. In the end he will be long forgotten within five years.

Another NFL prima donna. If it wasn't for football, this jerk would have been fired 40-50 times in four years in the real world. He doesn't know how good he has it, typical jock.

He will care now that its costing MONEY, real money. Plus if he doesnt play maybe a younger player has a brakout game and he loses his spot. No matter how great a player you are (or think you are) you want to play. This nothing he doesnt deserve.

plax isn't gonna lose his job to someone else after a $35 million dollar contract. but if he continues to cross the line that coughlin has apparently drawn, i can see them fielding offers for him. after all, t.o. got the eagles to the super bowl, but they had to trade him because he became such a distraction.

Why all the badmouthing shickey then shipping him out stating they are taking the high road going with the team over the individual? While the whole time this guy has been undermining the whole team concept then pulls that pre-season stuff..then the giants give him more $$? doesn't make sense they should hav ekept shickey too then ..... maybr they figured most of the new salary would be coming back to them sith all the fines anyway.

Incredible athlete...but wherever his head goes to sometimes I will never know.
Hopefully he keeps showing up on Sundays. Even dogging it during the week,
he and Eli are a great combo. It actually makes his screwy attitude that much
more annoying. Imagine all he could be if he put the effort in.

If Plax, the stone handed walking stick, could have learned to catch a fade pass the Steelers would be one Lombardi trophy richer. How do you get a $35 million contract when you can't catch a fade pass?

We football fans need to take control of the demand for football. The costs to fans is absurd and our money goes into the pockets of guys like Plax, who could not care less about the rest of the world.
Stop buying NFL merchandise and stop going to games. See how fast the costs comes down. It is all about supply and demand. They control the supply, we should control the demand. If we halt the demand, they have no choice but to lower all costs in order to get us back.
I love when some of these guys are holding out for 10 mil a year when they are already getting 7 and they say things like, "I gotta feed my family". Really? Can't feed a family on 7 mil a year? Ridiculous.
They get their money and the costs are passed on to us.
