Shutdown Corner - NFL

Here's something you don't see every day ... or ever, really. It's one coach with a little post-draft smack talk directed at another coach. Vikings draftmaster Brad Childress wants to make sure that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick knows that Childress just beat him like a rented mule in the first round of the draft.

The Vikings, as you know, got Percy Harvin at No. 22 in the first round. Childress is convinced that the Patriots wanted Harvin at No. 23. Here he is, courtesy of StarTribune.com, virtually giving Belichick the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag:

"New England was right in there. They were right behind us [with the 23rd pick]," Childress said. "No, they didn't think we'd take him [because of off-the-field] issues. Remember, they have our receivers coach there now. So they thought they could hold ... and he'd come to them.

"They were down there working him out the day after I was there. And [Harvin] wasn't supposed to tell anybody, and I was trying to pull that out of him, who that was. So, it was a little cat-and-mouse game that occurred."

"And my cat just tore his mouse a NEW ONE. WOOOO! HOW 'BOUT THAT BRAD CHILDRESS, ladies and gentlemen? CHECK HIM OUT. (Flexes biceps, tears his shirt off, and flexes some more.) Bill Belichick, this is MY DRAFT. MY DRAFT. Don't you COME in my draft and try to steal my Harvin, or you'd like to get DEALT WITH. Son, I can eat two apples and spit out a fruit salad, because I'M CHILLY BRAD CHILDRESS and I'd just got damn CHILLY in here, sucka."

That last part, I added myself. But I think Childress was thinking it.

In the days, hours, and minutes leading up to a draft pick, there's so much misinformation being put out there. That the Patriots really wanted Percy Harvin might be exactly what Belichick wanted Brad Childress to think. It's just as likely that Childress got played as it is that Childress just yanked the pants off of Belichick.

I'm glad he's happy with himself, though. Self-esteem is important.

Gracias, Pro Football Talk.

belichick, love him or hate him, has 3 super bowl rings and coached what was probably the greatest team to not win a super bowl.
childress has never won a playoff game.
i don't think anyone in new england will be losing any sleep over percy harvin.

Well Childress, I will give you the old cliche..................Shut your mouth and put it on the scoreboard!!!!!! I am glad we have talent but when we got a coach who can #$*% up a 1 car funeral procession, I don't have a whole lot of faith. If you want to undermind Belichick, why don't you first try matching his trophy case you knucklehead.

Even if it happened the way Childress said it did, what's the big deal? If I had a dollar for every time teams beat each other to players in the draft I'd be a millionaire...its what the draft is all about.
The fact that Childress felt the need to call one specific instance out is a little weird (maybe he really hates Belichick?) It kinda makes Childress look childish. All of this might be tied to rumors that came out in the past regarding the Vikings raiding the Patriots practice squad players kicking off a series of eye-for-an-eye moves since then.

Childress....Cluless. Patriots didn't need to spend 1st round money on a WR. They don't even need a WR right now. Anyone with half a brain know that. Apparently he has less than that.

Ha, like we needed another wide receiver. The Pats have Moss and Welker! You got played Childress, you drafted the player Belichick wanted you to draft. Nice job and good luck on getting that first playoff win ;)

Are you kidding me Childress? You THINK you know what the Pats wanted? A guy who would be a 4th WR at best this year? Please dude. I absolutely loved the moves that the Pats made. We had four 2nd round picks and we now have three 2nd rd picks next year so we can move up next year if we want. This draft looks good. Go Pats!!!!

Sounds like Bill played Brad into picking a player not too many people would have gone after in the 1st round. If anything, Pats like smart players. Harvin scored a 12 on his wonderlic. I stepped on my cat and it's wonderlic went from an 8 to an 11. Good luck, Vikes.

I don't know that anyone but Belichick knows what he thought about Harvin. But I do know that Gator receivers have a rather checkered history in the NFL and it was only a couple years ago that The Patriots got burned by moving up to draft one. Something tells me Belichick wasn't frothing at the mouth to go down that road again. Good luck Childress. I sure hope you don't have any team cruises schedled this year.

Love the Vikes, that being said MJD you are right on. Our wonderful coach and his kick *** offense will not even utilize Harvin correctly, and Belichick already knows that. Here is to Chilly getting canned after this year is through! Should have happened years ago, oh ya, that coach that won the Superbowl (Tomlin) was in Minnesota for a year and everyone saw his potential... should have been ours!
