Breaking news: Eddie Jordan fired

Check your pocket, Eddie ...

According to sources familiar with the situation (see: Majority, Unsilent), the Washington Wizards have relieved Eddie Jordan of his coaching duties. Team President Ernie Grunfeld handed E.J. his pink slip in a meeting this morning. (And you thought your Monday sucked.)

In five full seasons Jordan guided the Wizards to four playoff appearances, including a second round appearance in 2005. In each of the last two seasons the Wizards made the playoffs despite injuries to every single player on their roster.

Ivan Carter of the Washington Post reports that Ed Tapscott, who had carried the title of Director of Player Development but traveled with the team and essentially served as an extra assistant coach, will take over coaching duties — and the sexy 1-10 record — starting with a practice that will begin in about, oh, 40 minutes or so.

Good luck, Ed.

as usual, they fire the coach when its now his fault. is it eddie jordans fault that 2 started are out for most of the season? coaches should be fired when they have talent but still dont improve. were the wizards supposed to improve without 2 starters? were the wizards going to improve with no bench? those are the type of things that coaches cant control.

butler and jameson can only take them so far. There's no one else on that team, and they don't play D. Agent zero will never take them far because he's too selfish and he's not that typer of player. Eddie got screwed

as much as i liked eddie he wasn't going to get the wiz., even with gil and brendan, deep into the playoffs. there are some good coaches out there that will be a better replacement.

They should fire Ernie Grunfeld for those awful contracts he handed out this off-season. They should fire Gilbert for his comments last Thursday. They should fire Andray Blatche and Antonio Daniels for playing way under expectations this season. They should not have fired Eddie Jordan for something that is out of his control. I think the win against Utah did more harm than good. Because they shouldn't have a win right now and that must have raised expectations a little.

Hey #2. Most coaches are going to get fired when their team starts 1-10 and Jordan was one of the longest tenured coaches in the league. He improved the team when he got here, but couldn't get them past being just "ok". The nail in his coffin was losing to the Knicks the other night after New York had traded their entire team away and they only dressed 7 players. You have to beat teams in that situation. That was simply embarrassing.

I like the guy. He seems like a good coach on a good year. But players stopped listening to him. Since they cannot fire 5 - 6 players - it's the only solution. Wizards are going nowhere with Arena's me first attitude even if he comes back healthy. Time for some big changes.

same thing i was thinking #2, this is a bad move, no matter who they hire they will not improve. the team does not have that much talent to compete. that's what happens when you commit to 2 stars that keeps getting injured. they can't trade for someone who can make a difference, do what the knicks are doing just save your money and hope to land, James, Wade, Bosh or even stoudemire in 2010.

I would've liked the Wizards to give Eddie at least the rest of the season. He deserved at least that much from this team.

Who cares. They still can't beat Cleveland. Maybe when Lebron leaves Cleveland and goes to the Knicks, then they can advance in the playoffs. Oh, not really because Lebron will take any team to the playoffs in the east and beat the lowly Wizards. They have allowed Gilbert Arenas to hold them hostage and Jordan has showed no backbone in dealing with Arenas' bull crap. Therfore he is receiving hs just dessert. Next to go is that no defense playing, showboat Gilbert Arenas. Same ol' Wizards

Carlesimo certainly deserved to go, but this is the first awful season in a while Jordan's had... I doubt this will help them much. I'd say he's done pretty well with the team, especially considering all the injuries. I guess it just caught up to him this season.

Wow im like most of you and agree completely with #2. Seriously how can you blame the coach when he doesn't have the players to work with. It's the same situation with PJ Carlisimo he gets the axe and the Thunder clearly don't have enough talent. How can you get better with a interim coach? Doesn't make any sense...Makes Arenas and his comments last week very true

The Wizards should have resigned Arenas, because of his knee problems and egotisical attitude that doom this team from the last two season. I would sign and traded him and Jamison to the Clippers for Elton Brand and Eric Gordon whom left Indiana to play pro ball.

Damn man. It was nice having the local guy leading the team but he’d definitely maxed out what he could get out of this team. He did finally take us back to responsibility though. I have to give the guy a lot of credit. There should be some other good coaches out there that we could get that would love to coach this core of players. Hello new offense!

Get rid of Ed Tapscott and hire Avery Johnson. Grunfield need to do this as soon as possible, so they can make the playoffs and learn to play defense.

The Wizards are a joke. Seriously, it's hard to root for them anymore. This team has been in need of a big man for YEARS and the front office has done nothing. Then they turn around and throw entirely too much money at Arenas, who may never have two healthy knees again. I said it before the season, and I'll say it now - they should have traded Gil for a decent draft pick and gone after someone like Brook Lopez. AD isn't healthy, Stevenson isn't healthy (we're starting Dee Brown FFS), and Jordan gets the ax?
This is sad, I liked Eddie, and he should be commended for getting as much mileage out of this team as he did. Grunfeld and Wiz management should take a nice long look at the franchise they share the Phone Booth with, they could learn a thing or two.

The last 2 games proved that EJ should have been fired. During the Rockets game in the 4th quarter around the 8 or 7 minute mark the Subs of the rockets got replaced with the starters the Wiz had there bench guys still in the game. The Rockets shot out instantly scored and took the lead and didn't turn back. Meanwhile the coach of Wiz EJ finally called a TO to bring his starters in. The guys couldn't stop the Rockets who had the momentum. EJ has done this for years. EJ is not Phil Jackson who can just let his guys play out of a funk. Then losing to the 7 player team called the Knicks was terrible.
For those who think he shouldn't have been fired what would it take a 20 - 62 season. The coach had no fire and his players had no fire.
Avery Johnson would be a great fit for the team...at least they will attempt to play defense and get out of that silly Princeton offense.

It's too bad for EJ, because by all accounts he's a good guy. However, there were fixable things with this team and he just couldn't see. He has a history of placing too much trust in the wrong players (Michael Ruffin, Juan Dixon, Darius Songaila), expecting them to contribute wayyyyyyy more than they're able to. Several times this season Songaila has played entire quarters at the center position (literally, on the floor for all 12 minutes), which should never happen. He plays all of the starters at the beginning of the second half, even if some of them were awful (usually Etan Thomas), which in at least two games has caused the Wizards to fall behind and have to claw their way back. DeShawn Stevenson played 37 minutes against the Knicks despite shooting 4-14 (and 2-10 from three) and playing awful, awful defense.
His rotations this season never made much sense, which is somewhat understandable since certain players aren't contributing at the level they were expected to, but he'll sit players for three quarters, then use them to start the 4th, or put players in for part of the 1st quarter then all of the 2nd, and have them play well, then not go to them again until 5 minutes are left in the game. At one point against the Knicks, the lineup on the floor was Thomas-Songaila-McGuire-Stevenson-Dixon, which should only be watched as one views a solar eclipse.
Was the Wizards' record entirely EJ's fault? No. McGee is still developing, Blatche has been inconsistent, and it would be charitable to call Thomas' play bad. But watching the team night in and night out, there certainly were decisions EJ made that made it harder to win.
