Right-hander Doug Waechter has settled into his new role as ace of the Marlins' middle relief corps.
Waechter, 27, has an 0.71 ERA in 12 2/3 innings since being called up from Class AAA Albuquerque to replace injured righty Lee Gardner. He typically is the first reliever manager Fredi Gonzalez summons in the middle innings and has pitched as many as four innings.
"I had a lot of spring training innings in relief, and I kind of got used to the routine of being up every day," Waechter said. "When I get into a game with men on base, I just tell myself it's like starting a game and having to get out of a jam."
