Player Notes
Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) has been shut down from throwing due to "general soreness" in his pitching arm.

Advice: Tanaka said the pain he's experiencing is more in his forearm than elbow. The Yankees are saying that no doctor appointment is scheduled, so it appears to be a relatively minor setback. Still, the odds of Tanaka returning to contribute this year already weren't great and now he has less of a chance. The righty had been scheduled for a simulated game on Tuesday, but his timetable is now up in the air. Fantasy owners certainly shouldn't be counting on him.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a successful simulated game Thursday morning at Comerica Park.

Advice: Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters afterward that the 49-pitch workout went well. Tanaka continues to make steady progress in his attempt to rehab a torn ulnar collateral ligament and could rejoin the Yankees' starting rotation next month if everything continues to go smoothly. It's not often that a pitcher who is diagnosed with a torn UCL is able to avoid Tommy John surgery, but it's also not unprecedented.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) will throw a simulated game on Thursday.

Advice: It's the next step after he got through a 35-pitch live batting practice session on Saturday. Tanaka's progress from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament has been encouraging, but obviously he's not close to being out of the woods yet. The Yankees are hoping he'll be ready to rejoin their rotation at some point next month.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) felt good during a 35-pitch live batting practice session on Saturday.

Advice: "I felt like I wasn't able to hit my spot as much as I wanted to. I feel it's a little bit still rusty, but there were some good balls that I was able to throw, so it was a good step and I want to keep moving forward," Tanaka said through a translator. "I'm not saving anything when I throw each pitch." There remains no timetable for Tanaka's return, but he continues to progress in his recovery from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Perhaps the Yankees will get their ace back this season after all.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is scheduled to face live hitters on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Advice: It'll be his first taste of simulated action since being diagnosed with a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow back in early July. That injury pretty much always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but Tanaka is trying the rehab route first and having success with it so far. He threw all of his sliders in a 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon. The Japanese ace is aiming to return sometime in September.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw a successful 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon.

Advice: Tanaka mixed in fastballs, curveballs, sliders, and even a few splitters while reporting no discomfort in his right elbow. "It went well, but it was actually my first time throwing breaking balls -- something other than fastballs -- in the bullpen, so I felt it was a little bit rusty," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I'll have to brush that up a little bit." The right-hander was diagnosed in early July with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, but he is aiming to return to a major league mound sometime in September.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) will throw another bullpen session on Wednesday.

Advice: It's not clear how many pitches he will throw after he tossed 25 fastballs in his first bullpen session Saturday. Tanaka's recovery from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament has gone as well as could be hoped to this point, but he's far from out of the woods. There's no timetable for the righty's return.
