Masahiro Tanaka#19, SP, NY Yankees
- November 1, 1988
- Birth Place:
- Itami, Japan
— Player Notes
Advice: It'll be his first taste of simulated action since being diagnosed with a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow back in early July. That injury pretty much always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but Tanaka is trying the rehab route first and having success with it so far. He threw all of his sliders in a 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon. The Japanese ace is aiming to return sometime in September.

Advice: Tanaka mixed in fastballs, curveballs, sliders, and even a few splitters while reporting no discomfort in his right elbow. "It went well, but it was actually my first time throwing breaking balls -- something other than fastballs -- in the bullpen, so I felt it was a little bit rusty," Tanaka said through an interpreter. "I'll have to brush that up a little bit." The right-hander was diagnosed in early July with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, but he is aiming to return to a major league mound sometime in September.

Advice: It's not clear how many pitches he will throw after he tossed 25 fastballs in his first bullpen session Saturday. Tanaka's recovery from a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament has gone as well as could be hoped to this point, but he's far from out of the woods. There's no timetable for the righty's return.

Advice: He came through the session with his elbow feeling fine, but the Yankees will wait and see how he feels on Sunday before determining the next step in his recovery process. The Japanese right-hander is still hopeful of returning to the Yankees rotation this season.

Advice: Tanaka threw off flat ground again Friday and also participated in pitcher's fielding practice. However, Saturday's bullpen session will be his first since he was diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. Tanaka remains hopeful of returning at some point this season and Saturday's 'pen session will go a long way in determining whether that comes to fruition.Rotoworld
Advice: It was the first full-effort throwing that Tanaka has done since being diagnosed with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow back in early July. That injury almost always leads to Tommy John reconstructive surgery, but Tanaka told reporters Wednesday that he feels he can return to the majors this year. We'll see.
