Player Notes
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is tentatively scheduled to return to the rotation Sunday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Tanaka gave up six hits but went five scoreless innings Monday in an instructional league game at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida. The right-hander will likely be limited to 75 pitches in his first game back in the bigs. He was diagnosed in early July with a partially-torn ligament in his right elbow -- an injury that almost always leads to Tommy John surgery.

Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Monday that Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) could rejoin the team's starting rotation this weekend.

Advice: Tanaka gave up six hits over five scoreless innings Monday in an instructional league game in Tampa, Florida. Assuming he feels good Tuesday, the Yankees could clear him to return. The team mostly wants to get a feeling on his progress going into the offseason, so we wouldn't count on him in fantasy leagues. Tanaka was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow in July.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) tossed five scoreless innings Monday in an instructional league game at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Florida.

Advice: Tanaka gave up six hits to an opposing lineup filled with young Yankees minor leaguers -- most of them teenagers -- but he pitched out of those threats and, most importantly, felt no discomfort in his right elbow. There's been some speculation that Tanaka might rejoin the Yankees' rotation this coming weekend, but nothing is set in stone. He was diagnosed with a partially-torn UCL in early July.

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) will appear in an Instructional League game at the Yankees' minor league complex Monday.

Advice: It was reported previously that Tanaka could rejoin the Yankees' rotation if his next throwing session goes well, putting him in line possibly to return during the September 19-21 series against the Blue Jays. Tanaka and the Yankees want to find out if the righty is able to pitch through a partially torn UCL before they go into the offseason.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that it's possible Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) will rejoin the rotation during the September 19-21 series against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Tanaka had a successful three-inning simulated game on Tuesday and is expected to either throw another simulated game or perhaps appear in an instructional league game on Sunday. If things go well Sunday, he could be cleared to return. Tanaka and the Yankees want to find out if the righty is able to pitch through a partially torn UCL before they go into the offseason. "I think he wants to feel that he can go home and have a normal offseason and he can be healthy and come back," Girardi said. "I do believe it's important to him."

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) threw about 44 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday.

Advice: The session was split up into three innings. Tanaka had a brief shutdown two weeks ago due to arm fatigue, but he appears to be back on track. The right-hander is currently attempting to rehab a partially-torn elbow ligament and the Yankees want some sort of resolution on his status going into the offseason.
