Player Notes
Steve Cishek will join the Cardinals in St. Louis on Saturday.

Advice: The right-hander was acquired from the Marlins on Friday afternoon. He's en route from San Diego, but won't make it there in time for Friday's showdown against the Braves. He'll provide depth in the late innings in front of closer Trevor Rosenthal.

Cardinals acquired RHP Steve Cishek from the Marlins in exchange for RHP Kyle Barraclough.

Advice: It's a nice buy-low move for St. Louis, as Barraclough is a middling relief prospect. Cishek was optioned to the minors earlier this season after getting off to a rough start, but he's responded with a 0.71 ERA and 11 strikeouts across 12 2/3 frames since returning. He'll help set up ahead of closer Trevor Rosenthal.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports that the Marlins are close to a trade that would send Steve Cishek to the Cardinals in exchange for pitching prospect Kyle Barraclough.

Advice: Cishek lost his closer job earlier this season with the Marlins and was even sent down to the minors after posting a 6.98 ERA and 1.86 WHIP over 19 1/3 innings. He's rebounded since returning, though, with a 0.71 ERA and 11 strikeouts across 12 2/3 frames. Cishek will help set up for Trevor Rosenthal and offers protection in case Jordan Walden (biceps) doesn't return to form. He's making $6.65 million this season and is under team control through 2017.

MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that there are "at least four teams" checking in on Steve Cishek.

Advice: Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald revealed Wednesday that the Cardinals are one of those interested teams, but Frisaro is hearing that some of the other clubs involved are pushing harder than St. Louis. Cishek was dumped from the Marlins' ninth-inning role in May, but he's been very good in middle relief since his return from a short demotion to Double-A Jacksonville in mid-June.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports the Cardinals are "looking at" Marlins reliever Steve Cishek.

Advice: That's not a surprise, as Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has a history of under-the-radar moves for relievers at the trade deadline -- recent acquisitions include Edward Mujica and John Axford -- and the Cards could use some help in an overworked bullpen. Cishek, who fell out of favor in Miami after consistent early struggles, has rebounded from his poor start -- since a blown save on May 11 that precipitated his removal from the closer's role, Cishek has a 1.37 ERA in 19 2/3 innings of work. The Cards likely won't be the only club calling the Marlins about the 29-year-old.
