Player Notes
Red Sox prospect RHP Matt Barnes allowed two runs on four hits and two walks struck out four batters over 7 1/3 innings on Monday for Triple-A Pawtucket.

Advice: Barnes' prospect stock was already declining heading into 2014, so it certainly didn't help that he began the season by posting a 5.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 74 2/3 innings at Pawtucket. However, things seemingly have clicked for the 24-year-old right-hander over the last month, as he's pitched to a sparkling 1.59 ERA with 34 strikeouts over 39 2/3 innings (six starts). Meanwhile, opposing hitters are batting just .153/.227/.204 against him during that span. Barnes is an under-the-radar candidate for a September call-up, as the Red Sox will need to add him to their 40-man roster this fall to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft.

Red Sox prospect righty Matt Barnes struck out seven over 6 1/3 shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks for Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday.

Advice: Barnes had a brutal 5.06 ERA and opposing hitters had a .297/.366/.422 line with a 6.9 K/9 through his start on July 12. During his six outings since then, he has a 1.63 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .150/.230/.203 line with a 7.5 K/9. Barnes could be a solid No. 3 major league starter long-term, but his poor control results in high pitch totals and too many walks. During his hot streak, he has thrown in excess of 62 percent of his pitches for strikes, which is a good step forward. He should be up at some point in early-2015, and could even see a cup of coffee this September.
