Player Notes
Nationals manager Matt Williams said that Stephen Strasburg (back) felt fine coming out of his bullpen session Thursday.

Advice: Strasburg left his most recent start on Sunday due to discomfort in his upper back and will have his turn skipped on Friday. However, the expectation is that he'll make his return for a crucial series against the first-place Mets early next week.

Stephen Strasburg (back) won't start on Friday as originally hoped.

Advice: Strasburg played catch Wednesday and is still slated to throw a bullpen session Thursday, but Tanner Roark will take the hill against the Braves. Wednesday was the second consecutive day Strasburg has played catch, a good sign even if he's not yet on track to return to the mound. The right-hander is fighting through some discomfort in his upper back that forced him to leave his most start. More should be known about his immediate future after Thursday's bullpen session.

Stephen Strasburg (back) played catch without any issues on Tuesday.

Advice: It's a good sign, obviously, but Strasburg won't be cleared to make his next scheduled start until he gets though a bullpen session. The Nats had Tanner Roark throw only two innings at Double-A Harrisburg on Monday just in case he's needed to start in place of Strasburg.

Stephen Strasburg (back) didn't have his normal day-after-start game of catch Monday.

Advice: That's no surprise, of course, after he exited Sunday's outing with discomfort in his upper back. Strasburg doesn't have any structural damage, but he'll be given time for anti-inflammatories to kick in before he's allowed to resume a throwing program. He'll be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

Stephen Strasburg was forced to leave Sunday's start against the Rockies after four innings due to discomfort in his upper back.

Advice: It's similar to one of the many injury issues that the right-hander has dealt with this season. It's unclear at the moment how much time he may miss. He has been limited to a total of 91 innings in 18 starts this year.

Stephen Strasburg struggled early in Sunday's win over the Marlins, surrendering four runs on seven hits over four innings.

Advice: Strasburg surrendered a three-run homer to Justin Bour in the first inning and a solo bomb to Derek Dietrich in the fourth. After the frame ended, Starsburg was pulled from the game. There was no initial sign of injury, though his fastball velocity had dropped to 92 on several pitches. If there's anything amiss with him, the team should clarify after the game. Hopefully there's nothing physically wrong, as he's pitched much better of late than the overall 4.35 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 98/21 K/BB ratio (in 91 innings) he's set to take into a scheduled home start against the Braves.
