Player Notes
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles' "first choice" as they look to add a hitter is Dexter Fowler.

Advice: Baltimore's signing of Yovani Gallardo is expected to be made official soon, and since they've already forfeited a draft pick for that addition, it makes since to keep adding talent. Fowler would fit the Orioles' desire to fortify the lineup with another bat and also a leadoff hitter. If they're unable to lure Fowler, Rosenthal says the club's "backup plan" is a trade for Jay Bruce.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that the Orioles will target a hitter after they complete their contract with Yovani Gallardo.

Advice: The club is hopeful of finishing the deal with Gallardo on Friday. Heyman lists Dexter Fowler, Jay Bruce and Pedro Alvarez as the bats the O's are considering. Alvarez is the only one that would cost just money, as they would have to trade for Bruce and forfeit a draft pick to sign Fowler. The O's had been hesitant to fork over a draft pick to sign Gallardo, but now that they're close to do that they probably won't be as squeamish about signing a guy like Fowler.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Orioles and free agent outfielder Dexter Fowler have had an "informal conversation" about a potential contract.

Advice: FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal has reported that Fowler could be a follow-up target for the Orioles should they sign free agent right-hander Yovani Gallardo, so it makes sense that the two parties have at least begun laying unofficial groundwork. A deal in the neighborhood of the two-year, $20 million contract the Dodgers gave Howie Kendrick could be in play for Fowler. Olney has previously reported that MLB executives don't see the 29-year-old outfielder drawing much more than that. His free agency is tied to draft pick compensation.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that if the Orioles sign free agent right-hander Yovani Gallardo, they might target free agent OF Dexter Fowler.

Advice: Gallardo and the O's are said to be nearing a possible contract agreement. Fowler could be next up if they can secure that. As to what Fowler might be able to draw from them, MLB executives indicated to ESPN's Buster Olney that a contract ceiling might be around the two-year, $20 million deal the Dodgers inked with Howie Kendrick. Should the Orioles strike a deal with Fowler, they would surrender the 29th pick in this summer's amateur draft.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, MLB executives believe it will be "very difficult" for Dexter Fowler to get more than the two-year, $20 million deal Howie Kendrick received from the Dodgers.

Advice: Kendrick's market didn't develop as he hoped this winter, in large part because he was attached to draft pick compensation. Fowler, Yovani Gallardo, and Ian Desmond are all suffering the same fate right now. There's always the chance that Fowler could beat Kendrick's deal, but that task is getting tougher with spring training rapidly approaching.
