Player Notes
Ryan Zimmerman does not need surgery on his thumb.

Advice: Zimmerman fractured his right thumb on April 12 when he jammed his right hand against the second base bag while attempting to avoid a successful pickoff attempt by Braves starter Alex Wood. Zimmerman met with a specialist Monday who set the bone back in place. He has been fitted with a cast and will be out 4-6 weeks.

Nationals placed 3B Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right thumb.

Advice: Zimmerman suffered the injury Saturday when he jammed his right hand against the second base bag while trying to avoid a pickoff attempt. He'll see a hand specialist Monday but is not expected to require surgery. The anticipation is that the third baseman will be sidelined for 4-6 weeks with the injury. Anthony Rendon will take over at the hot corner for the Nationals while Zimmerman is out, with Danny Espinosa handling second.

Ryan Zimmerman was lifted from Saturday's game against the Braves after jamming his right thumb.

Advice: Zimmerman landed awkwardly while diving back into the second base bag on a successful pickoff attempt by Braves starter Alex Wood. He had blood on his hand and headed down to the clubhouse with a team trainer. Anthony Rendon moved to third base and Danny Espinosa came on to play second base.

Sat, Apr 12 Rotoworld
Ryan Zimmerman belted a three-run homer in a losing effort against the Braves on Friday.

Advice: Zimmerman's three-run blast off Braves starter Julio Teheran tied the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning. He finished the evening 2-for-4 plus a walk and is now hitting an outstanding .355/.382/.613 with a pair of homers and six RBI on the young season.

Sat, Apr 12 Rotoworld
Ryan Zimmerman is back in the Nationals' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Zimmerman hadn't played since leaving Saturday's game with a recurrence of his right shoulder issues. It's more of a problem for Zimmerman in the field, but he's trying some sidearm throws in order to combat the issue.

Ryan Zimmerman (shoulder) is hoping to return to the Nationals' starting lineup on Wednesday.

Advice: Zimmerman made some sidearm throws on Tuesday and reported no pain in his arthritic shoulder. He plans to use that throwing motion going forward. It'll be an ongoing experiment for the Nationals' third baseman. Anthony Rendon is playing third base and Danny Espinosa is playing second base on Tuesday against the Marlins.

Ryan Zimmermann (shoulder) is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Marlins.

Advice: An MRI on Zimmerman's right shoulder revealed no structural damage, but Nationals manager Matt Williams said during a radio appearance Monday night that he's dealing with an "arthritic" condition. While he did some early throwing Tuesday, it's unclear when he'll be ready to return to action. Anthony Rendon is filling in at third base Tuesday while Danny Espinosa plays second base.

Nationals manager Matt Williams said during a radio appearance Monday night that Ryan Zimmerman has an "arthritic shoulder."

Advice: An MRI exam over the weekend revealed no structural damage, but Zimmerman's right shoulder has been an issue for a couple of seasons now and there's no real end in sight. The Nationals could ease the burden somewhat by cutting down on pre-game throwing and having him play the occasional game at first base, but an eventual move across the diamond appears inevitable. Adam LaRoche's contract expires after this season, so we're thinking it will happen next season.
