Player Notes
Initial tests for possible ligament damage in Brandon McCarthy's right elbow came back negative.

Advice: It doesn't mean he definitely doesn't have a ligament issues -- we'll know for sure after his MRI -- but it's certainly a good sign. The hope is that McCarthy is "only" dealing with tendinitis. He's looking at a stint on the disabled list either way, but surgery won't be required if it's a tendinitis issue. McCarthy admitted that he's been dealing with tightness in his elbow since his last start but it finally became too much on Saturday.

Brandon McCarthy left his start Saturday against the Padres with right elbow tightness.

Advice: Miraculously, McCarthy still managed to pick up the win despite giving up six runs, including three homers, in five innings of work. McCarthy was scheduled to pitch Friday against the Diamondbacks, but that seems unlikely now. An MRI is likely coming. Mike Bolsinger may be called upon to make a spot start.

Brandon McCarthy left Saturday's game against the Padres with an undisclosed injury.

Advice: McCarthy exited after giving up a three-run shot to Justin Upton in the sixth inning. He motioned for the trainer immediately after serving up the home run pitch, but it was unclear what exactly was bothering him. Sergio Santos entered the game in relief. Until we know more, consider McCarthy day-to-day.

Brandon McCarthy struck out six batters and did not allow a run to the Rockies in picking up his second win of the season on Sunday.

Advice: McCarthy had struck out 19 batters in his previous two starts. While he didn't go K-crazy on Sunday, he pitched efficiently, only allowing three hits and two walks in his six innings and exiting with just 92 pitches on the arm. The veteran has now struck out 25 in 18 innings. McCarthy's career K/9 is 6.6, so it's probably not logical to expect him to keep up this breakneck pace. He's in a good place with the Dodgers, though, and could end up with a fair number of wins by the end of the season. He'll try to build on the shutout in his start against the Padres next weekend.
