Beckett struck out five and walked two while giving up five runs on six hits over seven innings against the Orioles on Wednesday. Recommendation: It was far from Beckett's best work as the Orioles took him deep for a pair of homers and were in excellent position for a win until Jim Johnson and George Sherrill spontaneously combusted and gave up four runs in the eighth. Entering his start on Wednesday, Beckett had delivered six or more shutout innings in four of his previous five starts. Chalk this one up as a blip on the radar. |

Beckett pitched seven scoreless innings against Atlanta, leading the first-place Boston Red Sox to a 4-1 win Friday night. Advice: Beckett has faced the Braves twice in a span of seven days and did not give up a run. He threw a five-hit, no-walk shutout at Fenway Park last weekend. This time, he allowed six hits, struck out six and didn't walk anyone before turning it over to the bullpen. In his last seven starts against Atlanta, Beckett is 6-0 with a 0.38 ERA. |

RHP Josh Beckett has had some very good performances against the Atlanta Braves over the course of his career, and he was downright dominant against them again on Friday night. Beckett threw seven shutout innings, allowed six hits and fanned six batters after throwing a complete game shutout against the Braves at Fenway Park last week. The hard-throwing Sox right-hander is 6-0 with a 0.38 ERA in his last seven starts against the Braves -- a level of performance that's about as good as it gets at the big league level. |
