Oh, sweet taco thievery! For the second year in a row, everyone in America is eligible for a free taco at Taco Bell, thanks to a stolen base in the first game of the World Series.
So who can we thank for being a tortilla-swiping Robin Hood, stealing from the chain restaurant and redirecting the ground beef, shredded lettuce and cheese toward the mouths of the hungry?
Why, none other than Tampa Bay shortstop Jason Bartlett, who gained an immortality powered by Fire sauce with a stolen base off Philly catcher Carlos Ruiz with two outs in the fifth!
Bartlett joins Red Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury in the Free Taco Hall of Fame and can also take pride in the fact that his swipe will do more than feed much of America on Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 2-6 p.m. The stolen base also put him in scoring position for Akinori Iwamura's double, closing Tampa Bay's deficit against Cole Hamels to 3-2.
No doubt, though, that Bartlett will live on as a legend in the minds of many for his seemingly simple, yet very difficult task. Mark my words: One day, we will tell tales of how he once turned two cleats and 90-feet of basepath into a meal for millions. Many thanks, Mr. Bartlett. You are a hero for the ages.
