Big League Stew - MLB

Major props are due to Barry Zito. After almost an entire season of being victimized by the unflattering cameras of the Associated Press, he's decided to take charge and float a few good-looking images to the public himself by becoming a fashion model.

OK, so it wasn't exactly Zito's idea to be featured wearing True Religion jeans on the sides of buses, buildings and on the company's website — a TR executive who spied Zito while flipping through a California tourism magzine is responsible for that.

Still, it seems that Zito is excited to present another side of himself to the world than the 7-year, $126 million bust he's been sadly showing while playing in San Francisco the past two seasons.

For those of you wondering how a 8-15, 5.31 pitcher could endorse anything, know that both Zito and True Religion swear this nameless campaign is not about his regular profession, but rather his looks (which include a hairstyle that probably requires more time each morning than a month's worth of bullpen sessions.)

But, hey, at least he'll have something to fall back on should he ever blow that $126 mil. (And given that most True Religion jeans cost north of $200, he'll also be able to afford them.)

From the San Jose Mercury News:

The Zito ads will appear on the sides of buses in Japan. In San Francisco, a True Religion billboard is planned for a building near the intersection of Bush Street and Van Ness Avenue.

"It's crazy,'' Zito said. "I got a text message from (former A's teammate) Eric Byrnes that said, 'Dude, my wife just saw you on a billboard in Vegas. You've got to be (kidding) me!' ''

Zito did not seek out this second career. He told his publicist, Kathy Jacobson, to refuse any endorsement offers - especially when he had an 0-8 record after nine starts.

"I can't be the `Seiko guy,' none of that,'' Zito said. "That just looks bad, like I'm not focusing on baseball. But Kathy said, `No, it's not an endorsement. It's not because of who you are or that you play baseball. This is a modeling gig.' ''

The thing I like best about this story is that with anyone else, there'd be a sizable outrage after noting that he went to Malibu for a fashion shoot on an offday during the season.

With Zito, though, it's likely that most Giants fans would've rather he stayed there.

Barry Zito in Oakland was not side tracked by this stuff, now that he has the big bucks it shows how a lot of this can go to an athletes head. He needs to focus more on his pitching than this CRAP. Although the Giants are clearly out of any playoff contention, he should still be developing his strengths.

Although I'm not a fan of Zito, I must say that this article is very deceiving. I read the actual article this morning in the San Jose Mercury and they make it very clear that Zito is NOT endorsing True Religion. The news clip shown from the SJ Merc seems contradictory since Zito states in the article that he doesn't want to be endorsing any products, yet is seen in the new True Religion campaign.
Like mentioned in this article, the guy who wanted Zito to model the jeans saw Zito in the tourist magazine with a guitar in hand. He thought that Zito was a musician, let alone a professional baseball player. It's just a terrible coincidence that Zito happens to be a major league pitcher with a cloud of controversy surrounding him.

At least, Zito is the only alumni not involve in any controversy.....Reggie Bush allegedly accepted cash and gifts from sports marketers during his sophomore and junior seasons at Southern California to Mark McGwire's roid usages.

I know when I get through with a hard day at the ballpark I like to toss on a pair of True Religion's signature 5 pocket lowrise 'Ethan Heritage Big T' skinny. Signature Golden Big T thread combination. Standard 10 1/2" front rise and 15 1/2" back rise with a 16 1/2" leg opening. Available in our 'Delinquent Dark' wash. What a Blunder the Giants made, but then again they are the giants.....They probly like the modeling gig though.... They have an untappped demographic in the castro district. This may just take care of that. Gay men and women will fill the seats at pac bell...attending a giants game will be like going to a george michael concert though not as entertaining...instead of hanging chickens out when barry bonds walks they will be choking chickens when barry zito he pitches......... Good move!
What a tool...bad judgement by barry...not this year not at this time man...

But he's not winning....and it was not the smartest move so it is an issue...especially for someone who has the tag of ebing spacey, distracted like ZZZZZZito is... Does he want to be Patrick Duffy when baseballs over? ask him, he's probly thinkning about baseball being over right about now...more like wishing it would end...

I am pretty certain that Andruw Jones has an endorsement deal with the Jordan brand, talk about using washed up athletes with mega-contracts as poster children for your product. Jones has gotten chubby, at least most will agree that Zito looks good doing this.

Or did it just get you wet?
