Big League Stew - MLB

Chicks dig the long ball? Sorry Tom and Greg, not the chicks Ichiro(notes) prefers.

In a great New York Times article on his affinity for the infield hit, the Mariners great claims that he's never liked the ladies who can't appreciate the skill and precision it takes to leg one out.

From the New York Times:

"Chicks who dig home runs aren't the ones who appeal to me. I think there's sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I'd rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out."

Ichiro doesn't say where his wife Yumiko falls on the issue or if they have an open relationship so he can capitalize on his prodigious talent of, uh, getting to first base. Otherwise, I can't imagine she'd be too happy with this quote from her husband.

However, if Ichiro wooed Yumiko with a steady diet of drag bunts and Baltimore chops, then she's likely very turned on these days. Fifty-one of Ichiro's 184 hits in 2009 have come the hard way and he's on pace to set a career-high en route to a MLB record ninth straight season of more than 200 hits. He's also "flirted" eight times this season for his highest homer total since he hit nine in 2006.

Even as a heterosexual male, I can verify the strange allure that Ichiro projects when looking to get aboard by any means possible. Earlier this summer, I watched in person as Ichiro faced Arizona's Clay Zavada(notes) in the ninth inning of a tie game. The two immediately locked into a fierce battle with Ichiro fouling off everything that Mr. Mustache could throw at him. Each successful defense of the plate solicited a bigger buzz from the crowd and when Ichiro finally dribbled Zavada's 12th pitch halfway to third baseman Mark Reynolds(notes), everyone at Safeco Field absolutely erupted.

Simply put, there was no doubt Ichiro would beat the throw to first and I suddenly experienced what it must have been like to watch Ali fight in Zaire, Petty rumble down Daytona or Nicklaus thrill a gallery in Augusta. It might be cliché to say it was like watching an artist at work, but there's no doubt that's exactly the feeling that Ichiro evokes any time he aims to advance 90 feet from home plate to first base.

Going back to Ichiro's quote, I can't say for certain whether or not there are women who value the beauty of a well-executed infield single over the strength of a home run, but I will tell you this — Every baseball nerd would sure like to find one.

Ken's comment is moronic. It's no reflection on any number of great players because they don't have a World Series' Ring. If anything, it shows how lucky players were to play on great teams which probably would have won without them. If a player has accomplished as much as Ichiro has on such poor teams, it's actually a better indication of how much harder they have to play to accomplish what they've accomplished. It was a lot easier for Rose to hit on one of the greatest hitting teams of all time. Pitchers didn't just have to be perfect to hit to Rose as they can with Ichiro, they had to be careful with the entire lineup.

What Ichiro doesn't get is that they were talking metaphorically...While he may prefer simply getting to first then calling it a night, most of us prefer at least a triple...

Actually the baseball stat nerds, who don't actually enjoy the game but rather the numbers, hate Ichiro's game because he doesn't hit for power and doesn't walk enough.

Ken please shut up. There are plenty of great players and even HOF's with no rings.
I look foward to watching Ichiro's induction ceremony into the HOF later in his career

    LA Taco,
Doesn't walk enough? Who cares? Does that mean you love Carlos Pena walked 81 times, and has a.221 avg, and .355 OBP ?
Ichiro has an OBP of .389. What difference does it makes whether he walks or gets a hit to get on base?

Straight up this guy is one of the best players in the game today and possibly one of the best to play the game. People fail to realize that Ichiro came to the MLB after he was in his late twenties almost early thirties because he was one of the major stars in the Japanese leagues. So realistically, Ichiro's numbers based on his body of work in the MLB are not completely accurate. If this guy started in the majors from when he was 19 or 20 we might be talking about him and Pete Rose in the same breathe.
    .
I will end with this, although he may not hit for power, he's clutch!! Every year Ichiro consistently will hit above .300, will have 200 + hits, 20 sbs, 85 RBIs. The only other person in the league hitting for power with numbers even close to Ichiro's would be Albert Pujols.
Bring him to the Dodgers... Manny in left, Matt Kemp in Center, Ichiro in right...

Ken obviously doesn't appreciate baseball. He believes you're not a great player unless you win a championship. What about the scrubs and cheats who did win a ring? Does that make them better than Ichiro or any other consistently amazing player? Find another sport to read articles about because you clearly don't know baseball. Oh, and that guy wasn't calling you names; he said your COMMENT was MORONIC (which it was), but you don't seem to be able to read so well...

I can promise you that there are at least a small group of us chicks who love small ball and especially Ichiro. Lance A you hit on the head, including the Dodger outfield. Ichiro is known for his amusing quotes, so I assume that's why he kept the word chicks in his statement, and I think its hysterical to have that coming out of his mouth. Though I'd like to pop anyone else who said it.

Geoff, Ichiro is actually a riot. I've heard a story where every year at the All-Star game, he fires everyone up in the locker room by telling jokes, playing pranks, and giving feux-inspirational speeches in his broken English. Players say Ichiro keeps them in stitches.

Ichiro is awesome. I love watching him hit. During the World Baseball Classic, that at-bat of his that put Japan ahead. It was wonderful drama. I'm a Dodgers fan, but there are some players I love to watch and appreciate. The Mariners have two: Griffey Jr. and Ichiro!

Ichiro is a very funny guy and I'm convinced that all his funny quotes are made with his tongue firmly planted in cheek. He actually speaks very good English. To read some of his best, try http://100percentinjuryrate.blogspot.com/2007/06/existential-angst-of-ichiro-suzuki.html or just search on Ichiro quotes.

A hit is a hit no matter how hard you hit it. It's all about base runners and scoring runs. With someone like Ichiro leading off all you need is solid 2 and 3 hitters to hit behind him to put a lot of pressure on the defense. It would have been sick to watch what would have happened if he were there with A-Rod, Edgar and Junior in the 90's instead of playing in Japan. The only other leadoff hitter's I've seen that I would rather have than him are Henderson and Rose. Also remember that he is a quality defensive player with outstanding range and a rifle for an arm. Watch and learn while you can everone because when he's gone you may not see another player like him for a while.

I live in Seattle. If anyone remembers 2001 than u would remember him winning an MVP, a rookie of the year, a gold glove, a silver slugger, also helping his team win 116 games to tie the all-time record. He did this with no MLB experience. I think that is one of the greatest feats in the history of the game. He also broke the all time hits record with 262. He is going to set the record for most 200 hit seasons in a row. 2000+ hits in 9 seasons. In 9 years he has only missed about 20 games. He has a cannon of an arm. He has over 3000 hits in Japan and MLB combined. This guy is easily one of the most dominant players in the history of MLB. He is also a comedian. Best Mariners of all-time in order. Griffey, Randy, Ichiro, A-Rod, Edgar...

Take a little heat off Ken, he's a Mets fan. I'm sure there's a lot of built up aggression in him(especially with the Johan news...). Lets all face it, this is an absolutely terrible article. I give props to Ichiro cause the guy is lightning fast, but his hits are nothing special. If he wasn't so fast they'd be just another groundout like everyone else. If you want to talk about someones ability to get to first almost every at bat look at Joe Mauer. Pretty little liners, not cheap infield hits.
