It took nearly six full matches, but the 2014 World Cup's first red card came at the end of Costa Rica's 3-1 upset win over Uruguay and it was deserved. With a hacking kick, Uruguay's Maxi Pereira chopped down Costa Rica scorer Joel Campbell in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end of the match.

Given the result and the way it happened — with Uruguay taking an early lead and then allowed two goals in three minutes in the second half before Costa Rica added a third in the 84th minute — Pereira's act was almost certainly rooted in frustration.

This was the 160th red card in World Cup history and now gives Uruguay nine all-time, which is third behind Brazil (11) and Argentina (10). Uruguay's last World Cup red card was, of course, Luis Suarez's much talked about goal-line handball against Ghana in 2010. Suarez was on the bench for the match against Costa Rica due to injury.
